Subject: transmission or other? IP: Logged
Message: I have something strange going on right now that I can't figure out.
It started about 2 months back when a couple times in a week span or so, while accelerating from a light (just normal), at around 45-50 it would seem to cut-out. I don't think it was engine, more like the transmission let go then hit again.
Then we went on a vacation and about 200 miles from home on the interstate at 70-75 with cruise on. Check engine and dropped out of cruise. Got to nearest town, found an advance and wrote down code (don't remember the #). They looked it up and it was TPS.
I had replaced the TPS about 2 years prior and that time there was advance warning (wild rpm fluctation, appearance of transmission slip). Then later the light came on, not out of the blue like this time.
Now with new TPS, I have the same sort of cut-out (usually when accelerating up slight hill from stop and usually around 45-50). It also shudders slightly when running steady most noticeable around 50-55, 60 or so less noticeable. Usually you have to drive to feel it, passenger can't. Also with OD off it is more noticeable (I think because higher RPM).
Last night I put old TPS back in and no error.
It is 2000 4.7 QC with 146,XXX. Transmission has been serviced 5 times (first 2 no filter change as I had wrong ones, last 3 both filters and just drain). Magnet was dirty first time, basically clean all rest, fluid has always been clean.
Currently no error codes. Need help but don't want to go to AAMCO without some idea of problem.
I guess it could be transmission or torque convertor, but I haven't ruled out electrical or maybe even fuel system (I've never changed a fuel filter, or cleaned TB, etc., just cleaned K&N filter).

Message: No help?
OK, I still have "shudder", not always but sometimes. Have driven last two days only with OD off as it is more noticeable. Trying to figure out the problem.
Sometimes it seems to shift into 3rd too soon (around 30).
It also seems to be pinging a little.
If the torque converter is locking/unlocking won't the rpms change?
Can an engine misfire cause this (I read it could)? Wouldn't an engine misfire cause RPM change?
Why did it flag a bad TPS, and now I'm running the old one (bad) just fine?
Can a bad battery do this? I checked and it is 12.x V (gauge runs straight up at 14 when running).
Can an EGR system problem cause this?
OR O2 sensor?
What about a bad temp. sensor? I read this tranny tries to protect itself if it gets hot. What sensor tells it that it is too hot?
Can I easily disable the Torque converter lock-up as a test? All it is really for is to save gas, correct?
I'm hoping it's not mechanical and is electrical or something, but there are so many electrical parts on this thing, I don't know where to start.
Plan on changing spark plugs this weekend so that will be ruled out.
Maybe fuel starvation? Wouldn't RPMS drop. I'm not seeing any rpm fluctuations.

Message: When you were playing mix-n-match with the TPS, did you reset the computer? If not, it doesn't know what TPS is in there and is trying to run as if it does know. If the TPS is faulty, that only makes it worse. You need to get that sorted out first.
Converter lockup/unlock will show 400-600 rpm change.
The shudder could be a converter problem, wrong tranny fluid, or valve body problem.
Depending on the severity of a misfire, the rpm's will or will not fluctuate. Depends on how much it's missing.

Message: Thanks.
I did reset the computer (disconnected neg.) and held keyswitch for at least 30 sec. all the way to on position.
I'm still running with the original TPS (returned the other), so I don't think it ever was a TPS issue. Went approx. 500 miles this weekend with no real problem
(except I still feel hesitation at times, but maybe not a "shudder", definitely not a regular "shudder").
I'm starting to think fuel system. Don't have the gauge, etc. to test pressure.
Does seem to be better when cooler than hot outside. I do get up over 210 some times when outside temp. is 95 or so (mostly when stop & go, not steady on highway). Fans (both) are working, and it eventually comes back down.
Tried 89 octane on way home, not sure if that helped much. Also ran a bottle of Lucas fuel cleaner through it. Maybe I should try the SeaFoam? Heard it was some of the best.
I'll get the new plugs in next. It may not be a big deal, but don't want to break down when towing ATV out in middle of nowhere.

Message: I HAVE A 2002 DAKOTO QUAD 4.7. FOR A MONTH MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT WOULD COME ON AND IN A WHILE IT WOULD SHUT OFF. THE TRUCK WOULD HESITATE WHEN I WOULD ECELERATE. AT A STOP LIGHT I WOULD STOP AND TURN OFF THE ENGINE AND RESTART THIS WOULD FIX THE PROBLEM FOR A WHILE .RECENTLY MY THE PROBLEM HAS GOTTEN WORSE BUT NOW MY TRUCK WOULD ECELERATE BUT NOT SHIFT OUT TO HIGHER GEAR IT WOULD JUST STAY AT 30 MPH AND NOT SHIFT UP.WHAT COULD CAUSE THIS??

Message: I'VE HEARD THAT LOCKING THE CAPS ON WILL CAUSE THAT! Seriously though, did you bother to check what code was set when the light came on ?
