I have an 03 v6 but I am swapping in a 360. Will a carb setup be easier to swap in or a MPI setup? Also, are my stock guages controlled through my computer? Thanks

unless you have access to a wireing harness and ecm for that motor, it would be easier to go with a carb. setup but you will need to get either a fuel regulator or a mechanical fuel pump, since the original electric fuel pump works with a much higher pressure

I am pretty sure I can find the harness and the ecm. Thanks for your help.

Yes. In an '03, your gauges are driven by the computer. All of them!

ALSO!!
The instrument cluster is programmed with VIN and other info.
Vehicle mileage is stored in the cluster. It cannot be changed or reset, even by a dealership service dept.
Whatever vehicle you get the engine from, you should also get the engine computer. You might just want to get the instrument cluster, too just in case.

Wow, I havent even heard of that before! I knew about the body controller on the passenger side but not the instrument cluster. Thanks for the info! My dakota just started stalling after start up today and the fuel gauge started acting up yesterday. lol.

easiest thing to do would be to find the same year truck w/ a 5.9 as a donor for the drivetrain. then just swap a few parts.

Yep.

Brandon. In your '03, the combination of Instrument Cluster and Central Timer Module (usually behind the driver side kick panel) can be considered to be the "Body Control Module."
The reason I suggested getting the cluster from the engine/computer donor vehicle is that your '03 cluster is totally driven by your computer (none of those gauge needles are positioned directly by sensors), so without a serious bit of electronic wizardry, it's doubtful that it would work properly with a different vintage engine computer, or even if connected directly to pressure, temp, fuel level, etc sensors.

unless you want to make a custom dash and use aftermarket gages.

It would be awesome to have custom guages but I will be on a time / money crunch. The truck is my daily driverso I will need to finish it as fast as possible. Speaking of time... How long might it take to perform this swap if I have all the tools?

oh just one more question, will the v-6 tranny bellhousing mount up to the 360, and if it does I know the computor also controlls the shifts, speedo sensor and other things. that is if its an automatic

I just got an email back from the engine rebuilder and the 318 has a power band from 1500 to 5000. Now since I have figured that out... will the new engine be a good towing engine?
