I bought a 93 Dakota 4x4 5.2 with an automatic overdrive several months ago. About a month after I bought it the overdrive just stopped working while I was cruising down the road. It didn't make any noise when it happened, It was just like I had switched it off. I checked all the wiresand plugs but they were OK. And then a few weeks later it started acting up on shifting. Its shifts ok when its cold, but after its warmed up it acts up. When I accelerate from a stop, it has about a 1 to 2 second neutral before it shifts into second, and if I take off fast, it sometimes just goes straight from first to third with a 1 to 2 second neutral in between. But when its cold it shifts great, it doesn't slip and it acts fine, other than no 4th gear. I have changed the filter and fluid twice, (Yes, with +3) but no better. There was a little metal in the pan the first time, but the fluid looked as if it hadnt been changed in a while, but it wasn't burnt. But the second time i did it (about 1500 miles after the first) there was no metal in the pan and it didnt smell or look burnt either time. I've read somewhere that "flashing" the ECM in the tranny helps problems like this sometimes, but Nobody I've talked to so far has known what the hell I was talking about. And it kind of sucks not having a decent Dodge service shop in the area.If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a job for a tranny shop. It could be the pump going south. As for a good shop manual, try Ebay. That is where I got mine. +- $40. woth every cent. Be sue to get your year, they dont interchange.

You should try getting it flushed first and they should put in some additives to help too....I have a 92 and my tranny acted up really bad like slipping, holding shifts, and all kinds of unusual activity....plus its not half as expensive as a trip to the tranny shop...Or you might just wanna go there anywayz, I alwayz here about people goin through trannies on dodge trucks. Your overdrive could be your thermostat too. If your truck doesn't warm up to like 150 I think it wont let overdrive go in....

Sounds like a typical transmission seal failure. I had the same problem with mine. Fix it now before it gets real $$$$$$$$, with additional interal failures. If it gets to the point were you need a front pump and converter, just get a Chrysler Reman.

It is probably a low presure problem . If you rebuild it the pump and valve body should be replaced .

I have had the same problem for the past few days now. Mine shifts though the rest of the lower gears fine without slipping. It actually jumps out of overdrive into drive or second gear. It has been doing this since i replaced the driver-side wheel bearings (hub assembly)
