Subject: 00 4.7 "No bus"?? IP: Logged
Message: This is my first time to this forum. I am currently having a problem with my 2000 QC 4.7. It has cut off while driving several times now. You have to wait a good while (30 min to 1 hour) sometimes before it will restart. Several times it has given me a "No bus" code. The dealer checked the truck and said that it was not showing any codes and that when the No bus code was showing that he could not communicate with the PCM. He said that the PCM is going bad and that it will be $1100 to replace it. My question is is there any after market PCMs available or am I stuck with the $1100?
Thanks

Message: Neither. No bus simply means there is a communication problem between the PCM and another component. Many instantly jump to the conclusion that it's a bad PCM; in your case it may well be. Why not try a salvage yard PCM ? I got one to run my '00 4.7 for $80, located it through car-part.com (many boneyards together online). Do you have a factory alarm ? Sometimes there can be a problem if your vehicle or the donor PCM has the factory alarm, I forget which way can be problematical. My truck ran fine with the boneyard piece, no codes set at all. Some of the guys with the other motors seem to have the vin # flashed in to get it working, but didn't have to do that with mine. You want one for the same type transmission and emissions package you have (federal or Cali, if your truck has three cats - that's the California emissions package, used in many other states too). Might be best if you could find one for a QC if you have electric windows or locks, I'm not sure if any of that info goes through the PCM too, or just the central timer module. Good luck, hope you can hang on to the extra grand !

Message: if it is the PCM i think that would fall under the Federal Emissions warranty @ 8yr/80k. read your owners manual.

Message: Try checking the ground straps around the PCM. I had a similar problem when I had my 4.7 engine out and put it back in... same no bus message no start, turns out I had over looked a ground. No ground = no bus! May not be the exact same but thought Id at least let you know.
PS I've seen used PCMs on ebay for a lot less than $1100 if you do have to take that route. More like $120 just be sure to check the truck similarities in trucks as Kowalski mentioned

Message: I actually still have a 4.7 PCM. It's for a 2000 Manual tranny.
And several things seem to give the same No Start and "No Bus" symtoms so be careful.
I know first hand that a relay under hood will cause it and blowing a fuse in the fuse box inside as well.
A loose ground as said before also could be the culprit.
It could be a crack in the board on the PCM but you got to check everything else first!
Good luck.

Message: Haven't we already explained that ? You might want to reread the above posts; especially mine, "been there" and GraphiteDak's. It won't always be the same cause for everyone...

Message: Did you get a reman pcm or a brand new one? I have heard of reman pcm's having problems, sometimes it takes 3 more to finally get it right. They are quite crappy and should be recalled

Message: I actually bought a rebuilt one similar to a reman. Im
going to try a used one out of a salvage in MO. They
match all the necessary numbers. Dodge flashed the
last one but I wont have this next one flashed. I dont
believe it needs it.
