Message: thanks guys. i also have another situation. it has been getting REALLY HOT LATELY and when it is roaring like that the engine gets really hot. it almost overheated on me in traffic the other day. once i start driving again, it cools off a little but still right at about half way. does the fan clutch have anything to do with this?? and would the
fan clutch make it loose power and acceleration?

Message: The noise is the fan clutch grabbing and making the fan pull air, thus the roaring... And because it's roaring does not mean it's bad, just means the fan is pulling air. This noise the first thing in the morning is normal as long as it stops after you start driving, like 10-30 seconds, then the fan clutch will free wheel until the engine gets hot. When the engine gets hot the fan clutch will engage again to cool the engine and cause you to notice a loss of power, takes a lot to turn that big fan and cool the engine.
I really don't know why the fan clutches lock up in the morning, guess the fluid drains down into them and locks them up until they are spun for a while.
If the fan isn't roaring and the engine is overheating, that's when you know the fan clutch is going bad. Just had the dealer replace mine because of this.
Gotta love the 100K mile warranty the previous owner purchased ;-)

Message: The being engaged shouldn't cause the engine to overheat. It is ususally the other way around. The engine gets too hot and the fan stays engaged. If the fan stays engaged for long lengths of time then replace it. If it only occasionally does it then I wouldn't replace it unless you want to go electric. Mine will stay engage a couple times a year and I just live with it.

Message: So check the thing. Does it spin freely with the engine OFF? Does it free-wheel and turn with no resistance, or does it move very little once you stop pushing the blade? Is it stiff, and difficult to spin at all? The fan blades should move a short distance after you give it a good push, but stop within a around 6 inches of travel under their own momentum. If it's stiff, and diffucult to rotate, or freewheel with minimal force, it's shot.
