Subject: Another 97 5.2 question. IP: Logged
Message: I have a 1997 dakota, 5.2 5 speed.(currently trying to sell my 98) It is stock except for the K&N filter charger kit that I swapped off of my other truck and a cheapy duals from last owner(should probably go. I have about 3 to 5K that I will put in this to get performance. Luckily I can do most myself. I read in another post that the 318 is capable of 400 horses and still be reliable. Is this true? This truck has 90,000 miles and is insanily nice. About 3 parking lot dings in entire truck. What I'm looking for is a list of Mods from the Knowledgable guys in the site. Thanks

Message: Sure, put a blower on it. Normally aspirated is more difficult, but it can be done. Maybe some of the confusion about this is in the 400hp number. Are we takin' 400hp at the crank, or at the rear wheels. I'm speaking of 400 at the crank. 400 at the rear wheels would be a neat trick.

Message: 400 at the crank would be find. That would be plenty of boost from the what 230 now? Honesty would a blower be the way to go? I hear of people putting 360's in these. Would that be compatible with my 5 speed? or would that be too much for the 5 speed to handle? thanks for your help.

Message: Doubt the 5-speed would hold it. Usually when fellows shoot for real power, they upgrade the tranny. The blowers, on an otherwise stock setup will easily deliver around 40% increase in peak power. For 400 at the crank you'd need more like a 70% increase, give-or-take, but adding the usual power improvers like a good exhaust will make a big difference towards that goal. The blower is capable of doing the full increase, but the amount of boost you'd need would be too much for the stock compression and cast pistons, and higher boost puts you at greater risks of blowing head gaskets without additional work. Naturally, anything you can do to make it easier to get air into the engine in addition to the blower will also help (better cam (always a plus), or just more lift from increasing the rocker ratio).
It's all about airflow. Ultimately, the 360 will make considerably more power, but it needs better heads to really take advantage of the larger displacement. That being said, it will generate more low-end power by virture of greater displacement.
That's why making 400 at the crank is a little more involved with the MPI units. Slap on a good carb/intake/cam/exhaust on a pre-computer unit and ya got a 400hp 318 at the crank without a blower.

Message: I have a '97 4x4. I installed a procharger, ($4,200.00 out the door)and ran 285 RWHP.
I eventually popped a head gasket. I replaced the gaskets with cometics metal gaskets and have been running strong ever since.
I started with about 100k on the motor, and now have 140k. I figure that when the engine does go, I will get a 360 built and put the blower on it.
Looking back at all the work I have done, I would have spent the money that I spent on the procharger, and built a 360 first. Then, swap out the good 318 and sell it. I know its not worth alot, but take that money and put it toward the purchase of the charger.

Message: Ok thanks for the input. Would the 5speed tranny hold up to the built 360? thanks

Message: i believe you can get about 400hp on an 318. i have an 2000 ram had a 318 and a turbo i fab. my self, when pushing 12psi i was at 400 at wheels.that was on a stock motor with just an small cap (10 over rt),ported intake(runners cut back about 2")but be careful head gaskets push out at about 13-14psi.

Message: Yeah, if I was going turbo, just to be on the safe side I would go ahead and change out the head-gaskets.
