Subject: towing automatic? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 93 Dakota 2wd with a V8. I have replaced the tranny once before, and just replaced it again. I only have 106,000 miles on it. Is it possible to tow a carhauler or simular trailer with this setup? I was told that since I towed a trailer, using overdrive, that I was responsible for the tranny problems! Is this possible? Please help!!

Message: Get a large external tranny fluid cooler and DO NOT tow in overdrive with a stock transmission. You wanna tow with an automatic in OD? Pay for an aftermarket performance model built to take the punishment..something like: http://www.transmissionsone.com/
The stock setup just doesn't have good enough clutch material to tolerate the heat and stress. Get a good one, or have yours rebuilt with the good parts, a tranny valve body kit, and an external cooler, and it'll be great. Don't feel bad, my '89 Shelby Dak fried the tranny 7 times, 6 of them under warranty. It was the OD every time, and I never towed anything.

Message: Thanks for the reply. Should I also limit the use of the overdrive, even when I am not hauling or towing anything? I am going to invest in a tranny cooler. I plan to go to a local tranny shop that I trust and have him install the cooler. Sound like a plan? Thanks again.

Message: Only if the transmission is "hunting" - going back and forth between gears.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: Yeah. On the gear hunting. The tranny kits help with that too. Short of that, I'd lock it out.
