My wife has been using my R/T lately and told me it's making a 'funny' noise (THAT alone will scare you).
It sounds like a ring and pinion howl, but only 'till it gets to speed (65-70 mph).
I've changed the grease in the rear before because it started "chattering" when it was in reverse. I haven't seen any fluid leaking.
I know that if it's low, the bearing would have siezed by now. Any ideas what could cause this noise other than that? I've drove it a few times and everything seems fine, except for that "howl".
(i have a '67 Camaro that siezed the pinion bearing due to low grease;ie:leak)
thanks

The bearing won't necessarily seize, unless it's bone dry. If you think it's ring/pinion howl, it most likely is. You might get away with an adjustment, but usually, they're toast. Just dealt with the same thing in my '90 RC, same basic rear end. Same undeniable howl at certain speeds. Ouch.

Dodge rears are famouse for eating carrier bearings. Usually happens in the 60-80K mile range. Sounds like you need a diff rebuild.

Yup....your carrier bearings are toast. The most common problem with the Dakotas. Haven't known but a few tro go over the 100,000 mile mark without cooking the carrier bearings. There is a bright side though.....I drove mine with the howl for over a year before I found a rearend with less than 20,000 on it to replace it with!!
