Message: I teat drove the 3.9 v6 and it wasn't any faster than my old 4 banger toyota p/u. Total dog, and it has to work so hard to move the truck that many say milage isn't much better than the 4.7. Don't believe the stealers.

Message: They're both good motors; I'd say look for your best deal. If the deal seems comparable, I'd favor the 4.7.

Message: Scott, I towed a 18' camper that was over 3000# loaded and my 4.7 2wd CC was averaging 11-12mpg. Not too much flat land towing as we went to a lake at 9000'. Truck is pretty stock except for synthetic fluids, TPS mod and a redneck intake. Without being hitched to that 3000# load I usually get 18-19MPG ;)

Message: Sounds about right - towing my boat or camper (4000-5000 lbs)will drop my milage to about 11 mpg.
