What does this code mean and how do you fix. My 2000 dakota idles fast then slows and fast again. At the lights it tries to take off on me when I have the brakes on. Also while driving I place it in netraul and the RPM is up @ 2000RPM. What is the problem.

Accelerator Position Sensor Signal voltage too Low.

could be just a bad connection or ground. or bad sensor itself. the sensor is locagted on the side of the throttle body.

My 2002 Dakota with a 4.7L engine did the exact same thing as yours. I let it go for a couple of years because it was just annoying and it didn't have a check engine code. Well yesterday it got alot worse and the transmission started jerking when it would shift gears. It gave me code P0121 this time. I replaced the TPS for $30 and it's idling smooth as butter and the transmission is shifting like normal.

I just had the same experience as Rammed1, so am posting this reply to bump the thread. My 01 Dak has been idling erratically for the last two years, along with hard shifting and the need at stoplights to hold it back like a race horse in the starting gate. Had it in to a dealer and my favorite independent, the IAC motor was replaced twice along with various other bits but the problem never really disappeared and would gradually get worse again. No error codes ever showing. Today, going down the highway with cruise set at 60 the motor started going up and down several hundred rpm the tranny seemed incapable of deciding which gear it should be in, and finally I had a SLAM downshift through no action of my own--and the check engine light came on. When I got home I pulled the code, P0121m and checked this forum for what it meant. Headed to Autozone and snagged a new TPS for $32 and half an hour later the truck is running and shifting better than it has for years. No more racing idles, no more roaring engine when I shifted into neutral when parking, and no more back-slamming shifts.

Thanks to those who posted this thread and gave me the pointer to where the problem was!

I will post just to confirm what everyone else here said. My 2001 Dakota was doing the same thing. At times it was OK but other times it got quite bad. Probably went on for 9 months or so. Three days ago I had the IAC motor replaced, and it got a little better until this morning when I was driving up the highway and it lurched worse than ever. The check engine light popped on, I turned around and went back to town, looked up the code and sure enough it was the TPS. Had it fixed today and it's running smooth.

Thanks to everyone here. If it wasn't for this site I might have paid for several other repairs until I got it right. Appreciate the posts!

I just purchased a 2001 Dodge Dakota with 173K miles and thought I was getting a nice well taken care of truck....well, drove it home and was told by the previous owner that the idling was high but after about 200 miles the tranny started jerking and i thought the trans was gone and I had brough a bag of bolts in "AS IS" condition..... I got home and took the ole code buster and got that famous or infamous P0121 and consistently get this TPS as the solution.... Well my question is: Where is this baby located and how do you install? Can I do it or do I need an authorized mechanic? Just let me know......Blessings....This was so helpful

the TPS is located on the drivers side of the throttle body it is two bolts and a singe connector it was super easy to get off and put on the part is like 40 bucks at auto zone but i had the same problem on my 01 Dakota by the way you should look in to spending the 40 bucks and getting a hayens book for the truck with that many miles on it you will have a lot of little things easy to fix an it will save you a bundle on it hope this helps

Had great success so far! Thanks for all the information! I hurriedly purchased the TPS from Advance Auto for $35.00.... my friend who was familiar with this problem and I took our first look under the hood and low and behold the vaccum hose that connected to throttle body was dry rotted as well as several other hoses.... We took care of them and started the truck and the "Engine Light" went off!...Check your vaccum hoses in that can apparenly cause the same problem..... I have been tooling around all afternoon and the truck runs great so far...Different as night and day from the anxious moments i had just 24 hours earlier when I thought the trans was shot..... Did not have to install the TPS.... Did not take it out the plastic....Returned it already.... Hope I do not have to go back and purchase it but learned a lot and will be purchasing eh hayens book... this is a nice truck and will be paying attention to matters that I can fix.....
These posting are absolutely outstanding.....

Ive had the same code for over a year now and I
changed the TPS and the MAP sensors but didnt fix it
I thought it could be the wires coming from the TPS
but I cant find any fault in them could it be
possible that I bought a faulty TPS from Autozone?
Should I go buy another one to find out?

Hey kris my problem was code p0121 and it wouldn't hold idle
I replaced the tps sensor 4-5 times then finally got a good one
so might just be a faulty sensor
