Subject: engine light issue

Message:
I have an '01 quad cab with a 4.7 and 75k miles
It is unmodified.

After returning from 6-day vacation, truck started with an engine light no other symptoms. Dealer said to drive it for a day or two to see if (vac seals?) would adjust. did not work. He then said to disconnect neg battery terminal and reseat after a minute. Light went out, but on restart would not hold idle w/out feathering pedal.
The next day, car started fine and I drove it to store. Initial restart was fine, but while in reverse, truck stalled and engine light was back on. Restart was fine but light still on. Local mechanic tested battery nd found battery ok, but indicated some unknown load on it. Plan to hook it up to a diagnostic tomorrow, but would like to have an idea of possible issues and cost

Thanks,

Dene

Turn the ign switch to on then off three times and in the trip screen it should tell you the code.

i would find another dealer.
4.7 is right. key on/off/on/off/on odometer will display codes. you can post it here or search the web for several different sites to find what it means.

According to many sources, it says to turn the MIL off and see if it comes back on.

there's no cost which is good. but you should check and note the codes though. so if the light comes back on you know if it's the same code or not.

honestly, that's the first thing I do. I check the codes, clear them. If the code comes back on immediately, problem still exists.

I started doing this with my wife's old 95 mustang. when her MAF went out, it would throw either o2 code or MAF code. I replaced the MAF in that car several times.

Yup, the code should have been checked before clearing; I wouldn't give that dealer any of my business. The idle problem is normal, and likely unconnected to the code if it only started after you disconnected the battery. The PCM can loose its idle memory when that happens; it will relearn. It helps to keep it revved up a little upon restart afterwards, should return to normal soon.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
