Subject: Headers IP: Logged
Message: About 1 year ago I bought a set of flowtech shorty (emission legal) headers and installed them on my 92 4x4 5.2L. After installing them I noticed no difference what so ever. I was wondering if just get rid of a bottleneck and allow other mods to perform better? Or should there have been a noticable difference?

Message: Is this your only mod?? From what I have heard you would need other mods that wen along with the headers (Intake, throttle body, manifold, exhaust etc..) to really see the difference

Message: I was talking to a guy at the track 2 weeks ago with an R/T and he had just swapped on a set of Flow-Tech headers , he slowed down .15 compared to the week before. From what I've heard the Mopar Performance headers are the only ones that make a real difference.

Message: The biggest restriction is the Y pipe.
MP headers replace the Y pipe. My MP headers are great!

Message: Your stock setup (from your Flowtechs) is the major restriction. You could have gone with Doug Thorley headers (mopar). They replace the Y-pipe. Your stock manifolds were a higher flow than the Flowtechs ('92-93 Dakotas were rated at 230 hp, using a LARGER exhaust manifold than '94-97).

Message: You should be able to have a GOOD exhaust shop set you up with a better Y-pipe configuration, and that will improve everything.

Message: Will they have to goto a smaller pipe so they can get it to fit? My y-pipe is 2.5" i think and in some spots it is almost completly flat. If they have to goto a smaller pipe will this still make a difference or can they keep it the same size and still bend it better?

Message: Do you have skid plates?? If so.. you might be stuck with what you have. An aftermarket/custom Y pipe might not clear your skid plates (that's the reason behind the crimped X-over pipe.) Otherwise, if you don't have skid plates, a good exhaust shop should be able to form fit you a better configuration (Y pipe) in 2.5". The Doug Thorley setup will not fit (from my what I remember) under the skid plates. This is also true for newer ('97 up) 4x4 w/5.2L I went with PPH for my '99, and it hangs down a bit (nothing major, still higher than the front front end/frame).
