Subject: Low Oil Pressure? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2003 Dodge 4.7L V8. I had a seized engine and had a reman engine installed. After installation, my oil light came on. I had the oil pressure checked with a mechanical oil guage and found it to be around 6psi at idle at around 35-40psi at 3,000rpm. My mechanic suggested the oil pump that came with the reman engine may be defective, so I put a new oil pump in it. I am still having the same problem. The warranty company on the reman engine refuses to do anything because they say 6psi is a normal reading, however, it is apparently kicking the oil light on, so there is still a problem. Any ideas or suggestions? Thanks!

Message: unfortunately, even though they are on the lower end, those pressures are within factory specs.
the FSM says @ normal operating temp - 6psi min and 30 to 80 psi max @ 3k rpm.
could be a faulty oil pressure sending unit. could be cam or main bearings. only way to tell is pull it apart and check clearances. i'd try a new sending unit first. or try changing the oil & filter.

Message: Shoddy rebuilders do this kind ofs sloppy work a lot. The engine cost to much to ruin quickly. You must tare that that engine down and mike everything

Message: 1. thats normal pressure.
2. replace sending unit.
3. a reman should be under warranty so if it does f*ck up, you can get another one for free.

Message: Thanks for the responses. The engine IS under warranty, however, the warranty company is sticking with the claim that the oil pressure readings are within the normal/acceptable range, so they won't cover anything. Tearing down the engine at this point is not an option, as I cannot afford it. I was hoping someone could give me a better idea of what could cause the low oil pressure, or what could cause the light to kick on. I have already replaced the sending unit and the oil pump, and I am still having the problem.

Message: have you tried changing oil & filter brands?
i think we listed some causes to low oil pressure. more than likely the main and or cam bearings are on the max/loose end of the tolerances.

Message: Changing oil and filter might be a good idea. Not sure, but a slightly higher viscosity oil might help too.
