I do have the tow package with the electric fan along with the clutch fan, and a heavy duty radiator.

daddio- the design of this housing is a double wall where the coolant passes thru a channel just behind the water pump so the coolant was not able to get into the crankcase.

Vanschlick - Please ask your friend where he purchased the installation tool. This is the only thing keeping me from putting my Durango back on the road. I've searched the internet but have not had much luck. The service manual lists special tool 8512 for the damper installation.

PS I also own a 92 Dakota sport, ext cab, 4WD, 3.9 l V6, 5 sp. It has 230k and is my daily driver (50 miles/day). The only major thing I've done on this truck in the last 5 years is a clutch. I think the older Dodges were built much better.

Glad to hear that the engine survived the overheating. I knew the head gaskets were of a good design but wondered how easy they warped.

Most fwd cars when overheated just once would have warped heads. Especially them Mitsu Made engines used in them Chysler minivans!
The 4.7 also has aluminum heads in a OHC setup. nice to see it's of a much better design!
I overheated my 4.7 once when offroading (without my clutch fan installed) and it boiled over into the overfil something aweful. but it never did hurt anything. Whew! :p

It has been 100 degrees here in Atlanta this week and I notice that I am up near 240 to 250 degrees with the AC on. When I turn off the AC, it goes back down to 210. This is in stop & go traffic. Is this common? I have a 2000 4.7 4x4 QC.

We were only 2-3 degrees cooler here in East TN today. My Dak is an '01 RC 2wd 4.7, but I experienced a similar situation as you, EJ. The temp would drop if I drove around 60, and backed off the A/C knob two bumps to let the compressor cycle on-and-off. I think this killer humidity is beyond the A/C capacity.

It has gotten up to around 100 here and I always go to work with the A/C on and mine never moves of 195.

Good point about backing off the temp setting on the AC to let the compressor cycle on and off a bit. I was worrying that my water pump was going bad. When I drive 60mph the temp drops back to 215 or so with the AC on. It is only when its 100 and I am in stop and go for a while. Maybe things are OK. I am going to open the radiator cap when the engine is cold and crank it to look if the water is flowing as it should be.

Good question about the AUX electric fan. I'll check that. Thanks for the input.
I took off the radiator cap, started the engine, turned on the AC, and let it warm up. The temp gauge never exceeded 200, but I really didn't see the rad fluid moving quickly through the hose. How quickly should should I see the raditator fluid moving?? Is the thermostat located in that top rad hose?

the FSM states that the electric aux cooling fan will come on - 1) with demand for a/c and engine temp above 130 degF - 2) engine temp at 210 degF. if it's not running under either of these conditions first thing to do is see if the fan is getting 12 volts then go from there.

I recently had the same problem with my Durango 4.7, after changing the thermostat, radiator, and purchasing a water pump. The problem was the timing chain cover (where the water pump mounts). The old antifreeze had eroded the cast aluminum housing and disrupted flow. This is not an easy job to change you will have buy a special installation tool for the harmonic balancer (Miller special tool #MLR-8512 for $58.95). I recommend that you remove your water pump and inspect the propeller and housing behind it for any signs of damage. My cover had several big holes in it. The replacement cover comes as an assembly with a thermostat, thermostat housing, and water pump already installed. The timing chain cover cost me about $260.00 plus two weeks of trying to fine a tool to reinstall the balancer.

Now with a new cooling system my 4.7 stays around 190 even under a load.

Good Luck
Fred

One thing to think about when driving in stop and go traffic is to take it out of DRIVE when you sit there stopped for more than a minute or so with your foot on the brake. That adds a lot of heat. Some of it from the transmission as it's sitting in gear with the torque converter building heat with it in gear.

My AUX electric fan is working fine. I do wonder if the clutch fan is working properly. How can I check if the clutch fan is working correctly?
I also wonder if the water pump is moving the rad fluid fast enough. When I take of the rad cap and let the truck warm up, the rad fluid is not moving fast through the hose. Should it be?
How do I know if my water pump is working properly?
The truck runs at 210 degrees when driving 60mph, but rises to 250 when sitting and the AC on, but goes back to normal with the AC off.

THanks for all of the help, guys!!!

I removed my clutch fan, bought an adapter and went with a flexalite fan. That and a 180 tstat, no more over heating(with the a/c and towing).

how do you check to see if the heads and gaskets are still ok?
my dakota 4.7 l 5 speed is overheating when its really hot out. its not doing it now since the weather has turned colder.
the antifreeze comes out the overflow. we changed the thermostat and that seemed to fix it for a while. is it the water pump?
I took it to a mechanic who told me its the heads or head gaskets, but that it would have to go to Chrysler to get fixed as it needs special tools for the job?
Please help-
