Subject: 2002 4.7L: How to clear PCM code? IP: Logged
Message: PROBLEM:
The MIL light came on in my information center. A mechanic friend of mine had an Snap-On "Modis" OBD II or III scanner and he first tried to obtain any PCM codes present? However, his scanner would not communicate with my 2002 Dakota 4.7L computer module? Is there a trick to get this scanner to read my PCM codes? If so-what?
WHAT I DID NEXT:
I turned my ignition key on, then off, then on, then off, then on, and I got an code P0455 regarding the Evaporative Emission Control System. Next, I checked my gas cap and I found that someone had evidently attempted to siphon some gas out of my gas tank-since the gas cap was completely unscrewed from the gas tank filler tube! My wife must have scared away whomever it was trying to do this, early in the morning, whenever she went outside to water her plants? OK, so I screwed the cap back down. But now, I need to know how to properly clear the P0455 code from my PCM so the MIL light won't stay on my Information Center screen-since, my mechanic friends Snap-On "Modis" scanner won't communicate with my dakota's PCM? scanner

Message: You cna disconnect the NEG battery terminal and turn the key to the ON and start for a sec (sometimes not nessessary) and reconnect the battery.
The codes will be gone but the PCM will also need to relearn to be most efficient, etc.
If you have a SuperChips, etc it will clear the diagnostic codes but not the fuel tables the PCM has learned.

Message: Are there any particular inexpensive code readers that will electronically clear the PCM codes? This would seem to be a better way than disconnecting the negative battery terminal and then, having the PCM to have to relearn everything again? My Dakota runs so good now, that I'd hate to take a chance on it not running this good after doing this?
Just to be clear, based upon what you had said about disconnecting the negative battery terminal? Have you found that just disconnecting the negative battery terminal should normally be enough without having to turn the key to the start position at all?

Message: if it is just the gas cap being off that tripped the light, it should go off by itself after a couple of run cycles. i know mine did.

UPDATE: I just wanted to let you know that you were 100% right-as it took exactly two start cycles to get the MIL to go out! Therefore it was the gas cap after all! Thanks again, for your precise diagnosis and explanation!

Message: Check the code with the key on and off three time method again. It still may be there. If you live in a county in a state like mine, the yearly inspection only hooks up to your OBD port to check for stored codes, and it will still fail inspection. (They also drive it too).
So if this is the case, take off either terminal, turn the key once, and it will be gone. I've had to do it, and the stored program runs well from the get go afterwards.
Good luck.

Message: I have had a code come up (mass failure of oxygen system or some such) for the gas cap being bad. The first time was not too long after we bought the truck (2002 4.7L quad-cab) new, and the cap o-ring was cracked. We had the dealer replace the cap, and noticed upon the next gas fill that the o-ring on the new cap was very lightly cracked as well. Had it replaced again; same thing happened. Got a cap at the auto parts store; same problem. Are there ANY good caps out there?

Maybe you should try a salvage yard ?

Message: You can clear the code(s) with an OBD-II scanner. If you don't want to invest in one; after about 40 start ups it will clear the problem(s) code on it's own (assuming it has been corrected}. Disconnecting the negative battery cable is the old school way and it used to work. Only the above does now.

Message: Even if you let it turn the MIL off itself it will still store the code in the computer. The only way to get rid of it is to disconnect the battery or buy a code reader.
Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer. well at least a stock one
