Subject: 318 dyno run IP: Logged
Message: I ran my truck on a wheel dyno yesterday.
Its a 99 5.2L dakota. It has shorty gibson headers,3" pipe all the way to the 40 series muffler, were it splits into duel 2.5" tail pipes. No cat.And it was power programed for 87 octane with the hypertech programmer. The truck has 92k on it.
it made 173hp and 230lbft of torque.
A little disapointed.

Message: All that exhaust isn't much good if the engine can't inhale better (cam), so power increases will not be that dramatic. Also, consider that the stock tranny is sucking up a nice chunk of power as well. A good aftermarket unit, or a rebuild with better-than-stock parts will make a surprising improvement in rear wheel HP.

Message: Just imagine how piggish they were in the late 80's when rear wheel HP was more like a whopping 125. Yawn.

Message: hey people get the impression that if you do an intake and exhaust you get like 50 hp for some reason. if you want real gains you gotta do like gen1dak said, get a cam, heads etc. actually change parts from the engine.
when i was in school we would dyno cars with exhaust, intake ect. and i was very supprised of the little gains if any, these vehicles made. some vehicles would actually loose 1-2 tq. but when we changed just a cam. oh man we got like 42 more horse and 45 more torque. no kidding, now thats worth it to me. if your up to the work in changing the cam, or actual engine parts. now youll feel somethin.
or you can just get it over with and spray the damn thing. lol

Message: Now that's a perfect example. Everyone goes for those 1.7:1 rockers. While they do improve over the stock cam with 1.6:1 rockers, they aren't nearly as effective as swapping cams. With a good cam swap, you'd have easily hit 285HP. With the 1.7 rockers on the stock 5.9 cam (.410" lift - very mild duration numbers) you get an increase to .435" gross lift, or basically the same as the 5.2 Magnum cam.....and it's a lot cheaper. You have all that capacity, but your cam specs, even with the 1.7's, are still crap. Yes, there are some minor improvements from reduced friction of roller rockers, but the majority of the power that is realized comes from increased lift. The higher ratio also, very slightly, increases the duration numbers, but you'd see much better numbers with stock 1.6 rockers and a really good aftermarket cam. And you can still add roller rockers later if you want.

Message: Jason,
My 4.7, with only measley HO cams, put out 218RWHP at the rear wheels.
227RWHP and 300RWTQ, with just adding the Super chips and premium, a whooping 8 HP/TQ increase. It is a manual however.
Let me get this straight, you have HEADERS, and then into a Y pipe back to a single exhaust, but ooh, splits again after the muffler? With headers?

peoples.. just get a baseline and you can go from there for
improvements with different parts.
my 2000 durango 5.2 V8 made 181whp 263wtq... with just a 40
series flowmaster in place of the stock muffler
