Subject: "no bus" now stranded IP: Logged
Message: I was stranded on the highway tonight when my '01 Quad 4.7l simply quit. Electical working fine, turns over, no ignition. The check eng, low fuel,& check gauges warnings light-up > then the CCD displays "no bus"
first time my Dakota has been on the hook. Any ideas from the group as to the cause of the failure. Doug

Message: exact same thing happened to me in my 93, fuel pressure tested it just fine, the iginition just cuts out, i was thinking bad pcm but it hasn't done it to me for 2 weeks now. mine isn't a 4.7 but i think the problem might be of similar origins. My dad and I fixed a lot of grounds that were bad especially one to the alternator, i think, possibly start there. sorry i couldn't be more helpful.

Message: holy sh!t my 93 is doing that right now. here is exactly my situation:
1993 dakota 5.2L auto 4x4 cc
I got discharged from the navy honorably friday, and started my drive back home. I got 66 miles away and the truck died. I checked it out and couldnt figure out why it wouldnt start. Then i checked for spark and noticed it had nothing. I also noticed the spark plugs were bone dry even after trying to start it. It does crank over, and spits and spudders sometimes. well, i had it towed to the "most reputable" shop around. the next day they fixed it saying it was the pickup underneith the rotor and cap. they said it blew out the coil. The truck was running, and thats what i cared about so i paid the $300 (i know i know) and hit the road. about 50 miles later same damn thing happened, the engine does not have spark. if i let it sit forever, it will run again like nothing ever happened. it may run for 1 minute or 30 minutes. It seems like something is killing the spark and maybe shutting off the injectors at the same time. NO CODES ARE POPPING UP AT ALL. my thoughts right now, is the computer is shot. i talked to an ex-mechanic and he said the OBD1 dodge pickups are know for the computers going out. i guess once the computer gets hot it kills the spark. whatever the case is, im stranded in some redneck town right now and i gotta wait till tuesday to get a new computer in. What the hell?

Message: My 99 and a friends 00 did the same thing with the "no buss" ....... the PCM is shot for some reason it heats up on the inside causing the "no buss" and when it cools off it will let the truck start till it heats up again... the good thing is that the PCM is covered under the emissions warranty

Message: Well, after a day of checking fuses, and generally tossing tools around the drive-way.. the truck will not fire. I'm going to have to charge the battery now and have it towed to a shop. I have had trouble in the past with the ignition switch. It was jammed and wouldn't turn, so I had Chrysler replace it. The new one had been acting up a little recently, so I wonder if the switch in the tumblers has failed. BTW, I went and looked at a Toyota Tundra today. Could the end of the line for me and Dodge. thanks to those that posted some suggestions. appreciate it. Good Luck jayb.

Message: I have a 00 4.7 and never had the no bus come up but I did have a problem with my truck starting sometimes then other time it wouldnt, then the next day it would start like nothing ever happend. It ended up being the cam position sensor or something to that affect. The shop i brought it to fixed it for me in an hour or less and cost me about 50 bucks.

Message: "no bus" is a good indication that the pcm has or is failing. You get the same code when dumping and replacing the program with a Superchips.
Jayb, if you are not getting a "no bus" then this is not likely to be your problem. I don't even think that indicator is available on a '93.
Maybe someone can correct me on that one.

Message: Why on gods good earth would you by a truck that they falsley claim will pull 10.000 Pounds dead weight? If they have to lie in there commercials it cant be that great of a truck. That 10.000 pound Cargo Hauler woulda ripped that Jap trap right off that cliff right along with any other truck out there inclueding fords biggest.(The duelly)I guess they baleive there are plenty of Suckers out there that will fall for it.

Message: The Tundra sounds like a pretty nice truck, Josh. I'm not familiar with that claim, but why do you think its false ? I once pulled 18,000 uphill on a gravel driveway (disabled backhoe), although I had to use 4 low to do it. The Tundra looks a good bit stronger than my truck, with 4.30 gears and more power.

Message: I balieve it will pull it on wheels.Iam talking about the commercial the one were they dead drop the Cargoe hanger off a cliff and the truck stopped the fall and pulled the 10.000 pounds back up.That is simpley immpossible for a Any truck unless it is a Big Rig and that woulda still been a job for it at a dead drop. There is a big diffrence when it is on wheels rather then dropped off a cliff.I see more false advertiesment with toyota commercials then any other out there.Ford stretches it also just not as bad as Toyota.

Message: Saw a commercial last night that claimed 10,000 towing ability; but it wasn't anything like that. I delete most commercials with the tivo. I've seen the commercial with the ramp - pretty wild but possible. I've owned some Toyotas in the past, and haven't noticed any false advertising from them before - what else are you saying they are advertising falsely ?

Message: I think "no bus" means the communication link is not working or something bewteen the pcm and some of the other electronics. I assume that anyway.
Anyway I have seen that in my odometer a few times.
For one thing I have a security system I installed that I spliced into the wire that power's a relay in the outside relay box that was labeled for the fuel pump. Evidentally if this relay doesn't power it also wont let the starter work or anything and I get the display to say "No Bus" if I switch the ignition on and don't power this relay within a few seconds.
I did this so my truck wont start without over riding my security each and every time you need to start the truck.
So right there you may want to make sure there isn't a bad relay in that box under the hood.
Now the OTHER thing that has caused that exact same thing is when a fuse inside the cab blows.
I had my radar detector wired into a fuse in the cab. And at one point my wire got pinched and shorted on my intermittantly. When it was in THAT fise the truck would stall and not start giving that same "No Bus" display.
I have a 2003 4.7
So right there is two things I know of for sure that would cause that display and the truck not to start. It could however still be a bad PCM, wiring problem under the hood, etc... But maybe you could get lucky.

Message: I've got my truck down waiting on my 408 to get finished so their ain't no motor or wiring harness in it and also the pcm is out of the truck to but when you turn the key over it will flash "no bus" and back top the milage, so i would say its in the PCM but don't take my word like i said its empty under the hood!!

Message: Why would we take your word for it ? . Graphite Dak has already explained this pretty well - it is a communication problem, which doesn't necessarily mean the problem is with the PCM itself. That is just one possibility. Your truck being empty under the hood does not prove your claim.
