Subject: "Runs Great, until it moves" solved IP: Logged
Message: WEll the computer finally put me in check mate, That is to say it solved my problem by revealing the cause. It ended up with the truck finally not being able to move at all while in drive. It seems that the transmission was the cause of the auto shutdown problem. Appearantly the forward clutch plates were fried and the overdrive clutch plated had welded themselves together and when the fluid in the torque converter got to hot it triggered the computers auto shutdown. Had I been smart enough to take it in immediatly after the first time the truck shut down it probably would not have burned the tranny beyond repair. but because I kept pushing the truck I get to have a new/remanufactured $2500.00 transmission installed. Next time I'll know better. Just goes to show that sometimes we oughtta listen to our wives when they say "you better take it to a shop Mr. Goodwrench cause pliers won't fix it this time". Damn I hate when she's right, I gotta go start kissin ass now. Thanks for the helpful leads and for allowing me to vent my frustrations here. Until next time wish me well and feel my pain. Gotta go do the dishes and start her bath. Pray for me,......Please..

Message: Well, the good ol' 3-speeds were not so bad. The overdrive units is what sucks, but if you leave it up to the professionals when it comes to things like this then they are not that bad. You have to know how to treat them.
'97 RC V6, 5spd, soon to be V8, 5spd! Maybe not a 5-speed, but an automatic will work.

Message: Texas Todd - mechanical problems suck in general; but I don't understand why you feel the need to constantly put down auto trannys. A manual with a bad clutch, bad throwout bearing, or worn shift dogs is going to be pretty annoying too. My automatic has been a real pleasure, holding up well to towing and plowing. I once owned a standard tranny truck when I had a knee operation - I thought that sucked...
Should I start posting "manual trannys suck", every time I see a post on one ?

Kowalski,
I guess I am bored at work, and post things like that. The manual tranny has far less problems than the auto, and if I read it right, his problem was in his auto tranny.
There are some advantages to the auto, as in the clutch is actually a little stronger for max towing, etc.
I'm glad you like your auto.

Message: I've actually found auto trannys to be more reliable, never having to replace the clutches in them for any I've owned. To me, the biggest advantage to a standard is that you can still start your truck if the starter dies. All the regulars should realize that other post wasn't you - the stupid troll forgot the email address !

Message: you both bring up good points on both trannies. i've never had any leg surgery but i think you are both nuts drivin a manual truck right after. but like i was saying very good points and i guess it all depends on driver preference.
