Message: I have a 92 dakota 4x4, 80,000 miles on it, has the 318. It runs great and everything is very solid on it except that I have had some funny shifting lately. I had my battery die, and it sat for about 2 weeks before I replaced it, which was enough to reset my remote starter system. I'm not sure if this is related or not, but I thought it was worth mentioning.
Now when I drive the truck, sometimes it shifts just fine, and sometimes it can't decide what gear to stay in. The torque converter gets the most work locking in and out, but especially between 3rd gear and OD is my problem. Sometimes when I am cruising down the interstate at 75, it randomly shifts into 3rd gear and stays there for a while, and then makes its way back to OD and stays there for the rest of the trip.
I should also mention that my cruise control used to work fine, and now it just keeps accelerating when I set it. I thought vacuum, but nothing was staring me in the face.
One last thing to mention is that today when I was driving home it was simultaneously flashing the parking brake and ABS lights at me intermittently, and when I turned the cruise control switch off, it didn't happen again. (Cruise was not set at that time)
None of this was a problem before the battery died... weird.
Sorry for the long post, but I had a lot of symptoms to report. Any ideas would be appreciated, I am not sure where to start besides tracing all my vacuum lines around for now.

Message: There is a wire connection somewhere around the battery/ecu that is known for getting contaminated or just generally shorting out. Moving it around when you changed out the battery may have caused it to begin failing.
Your problems are similar to those that I had with my 1993 5.2 liter auto Dakota. I just wish I had known about the faulty wire connection because I got rid of it without finding the problem.
I don't know exactly the details of this wire connector other than the above unfortunately.
I'm sure someone else can chime in with more details though.

Message: Thanks for the heads up. I will look into it. Got some information on the "infamous 3 wire splice" that I am going to check out.

Message: Figured this one out. It turned out to be a broken wire from pin 47 on the PCM to the vehicle speed sensor. Threw a code 15. Had to narrow down where the break in the wire was using an ohmmeter and a buddy. Shifts like new again. Thanks for all the ideas guys.
