Subject: replacement rear diff IP: Logged
Message: hi, thanks to everyone who helped me on my last post.
As stated, my rear diff went bad on my 01 Quad, and i need to replace it. I as looking at the Auburn Gear #542070 Limited Slip rear diff. Has anyone had any experience with it? Will it work? Ive read on other forums where people have replaced their stock one with this model.
the main question i really have is that the Haynes repair manual indicates i have a "Rear Wheel Speed Sensor" What exactly is that (Im no mechanic)? and is there one on this replacement?
Thanks in advance, appreciate the help since im completely clueless...

Message: I went with an Auburn limited slip with 4.10 for the 9 1/4 rear behind my '00 4.7. It works quite well, completely compatible with the speed sensor. If you have the 4.7, several of us actually saw a small milage increase (less than 1 mpg) switching from 3.55 gears to 4.10. Best performance mod I've done. The model # could vary depending on what size rear your QC has, just get the right one for your aplication. It's a stronger unit than the stock one.

Message: I've always wondered how moving to a lower gear set like 4.10's can improve mileage??
If you're crusin', you're going to be turning more RPM at the same speed = more gas. No?
Only potential I could see MPG gain would be in city with stop and go as you can get to a higher gear faster.
Anyhow...let me know your thinking. I'm curious - I do a lot of commuting and any MPG gain would help.
I run a 4.7 club cab with 5 speed stick. 3.55 gears - getting about 11L/100KM on average, sometimes better in the hot weather.

Message: Yup, I was skeptical too before I switched. It might be that the engine makes power more efficiently at some rpm ranges than others, and the 4.7 likes revs. Never heard the claim from the guys with any of the other motors. I went from 15 mpg to almost 16 with the change; then back down to 15 again when I switched to knobbier tires. It's not worth doing for that small an increase, but its a nice performance gain without a milage penalty. For anyone replacing their gears in a rebuild anyway, I'd definitely recomend that change.

Message: Ya...good point, the cost of replacing would take a loooong time to recoop in gas savings!!
I wish my truck had a 3.92 set from the factory though :-(
It runs through the gears nicely right now with 3.55's. However sometimes on the freeway going around 120KM/h and I'm looking for a kick down - 3rd gear is outta reach and 4th is kinda slugish...but speeds lower, I can drop into 3rd for a nice kick. Can only imagine 4.10's though....I wouldn't need my first gear anymore!! lol
