Subject: 2000 4.7 liter engine idle
IP: Logged

Message:
This morning while driving home, when coming to a stop the engine idle dipped to about 500 rpm. It almost seemed like the engine stalled, but it was still running ok.

Was wondering if that is normal, and what other owners 4.7 liter idle runs.

Thanks!

Might be time to clean the IAC (idle air control). It shouldn't feel like it's going to die. Could also be a bad TPS (throttle position sensor).

My 2000 has done that since new. I've never changed anything and I'm closing in on 95,000 miles.

Some do idle pretty low, and the rpm from the stock tach can't be considered perfectly accurate - but it shouldn't normally feel like it's going to die, as you said.

My 2000 4.7 also does this occasionally after stopping at a light. It dips to around 500rpm very quickly, then back up to a steady 625rpm. Has done this since I purchased it back in 2002 with 30,000 miles (now at 80,000 miles). I cleaned the throttle body and IAC solenoid, with no change.

The engine does idle pretty slow. Mine always did but I never "feel" like it's going to die.

If it feels rough enough then the IAC may be sticky or the TPS worn like someone already said. If you are only noticing the low RPM's by looking at the tach and the sound of the exhaust then I wouldn't worry about it.

It's the TPS. Had the exact same prob. $30 Napa. Easy to replace. 10min.

Maybe running at 500 rpms is OK, I am just not used to it dipping that low. The engine actually ran good but it quiet down, leading me to think it might have stalled.

Thanks for everyones input. For now I'll keep an eye on it unless it's causes problems

I have a 2001 with almost the same problem. If i run the motor in park, the idle runs up and then runs back down. I started to notice the same problem down the highway. Any ideas?

Quite possible, you could check for fluctuating output with a voltmeter if you want to be sure.

My 2002 4.7 with 105k miles on it has been doing this since about 40k miles. It's stalled out completely two times, but thats out of hundreds of times it dips to 500. Lots of times it stays there until I launch again, and seems to have no negative effect save for a slightly rougher idle.

If a $30 fix from NAPA can remedy it, I'd say it would be worth it. I'll try it and report back. But as of now, I can definitely say that you aren't the only one experiencing this problem.

BTW - Cleaned out the Throttle body completely, replaced it with a bored out one, cleaned all the sensors, and had a tune up, no effect on the low idle. So save your cash.
