Subject: 98 Dak RE42 New Tranny Bearing Noise IP: Logged
Message: I just put a new tranny in my Dak. The bearing type noise I heard during the first drive seemed to be the same as the old tranny. Thing shifts fine.
So I go to Detroit yesterday and on the way back near home I roll up the windows and hear this loud bearing noise coming from it! That's 360 miles folks.
What the hell is this noise and how do I fix it and how do I stop it from coming back?
I put a NEW torque converter in when I changed it.
The noise goes with vehicle speed, not the engine. May be rear bearing in the tranny. The only other note would be that I did change the rear end fluid from Mobil1 Synthetic to Amsoil.
I don't believe it has a warranty but I know it's a NEW tranny. I got it from a tranny shop selling on ebay but I know it's a NEW tranny by the lack of bolt mounting marks on it.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Blaine

Message: Are you sure it's even coming from the tranny? Maybe it's your hub assemblies. When these go out there gets to be a great deal of bad bearing noise inside the cab. Pretty easy to check out...jack up the front and get the tires off the ground...grab the top and bottom of the wheel and wiggle back and forth. There should be no movement.

Message: Actually I found it. It's the differential, maybe pinion bearing.
I jacked the rear wheels off the ground and it still sounded like the transmission. So I took the driveshaft out and fired it up and it was quiet as a church mouse. So I went under and turned the pinion and it felt rough. The sound was with the old tranny too. This explains it I guess. Drivetrain noise travels!

Message: Sounds like your Differential is making the noise even going straight. Scored ring and pinion will make a whining type sound that changes some or even goes away on compression. LS usually makes noise on turns. Bearings GROWL or grind. If your description is good, I'm betting Your PINION BEARING is shot. That is also confirmed by the rough feeling while turning the yoke. To be safe you need to turn each wheel by hand checking for a bad wheel bearing. Also check the yoke and the wheels for play.
