Subject: low oil pressure during idle.

Message:
To anyone concerned,
I own a 2002 dakota sport 4x4, 4.7 w posi rear end, 5spd reg.cab. I faithfully change my oil every 3000 miles, yet at idle,(in traffic), whether a/c is on or not, my oil pressure really takes a dip. It usually dips down to the line above the "L" mark. No engine light appears, yet it really dips. I checked the oil level and it is fine. I read some of your other postings and realized this is common with many 4.7 engines. My feeling is that I should switch to a 5w-30 oil, rather than the 10w-30 that I am currently using. Perhaps a change to synthetic as well? Also, what do you use to flush these motors?
Thanks.

there is a problem with the 2003 and lower 4.7 dakotas and rams. i replaced 5 engines at the dealership i worked at for the oil pump having low or no oil pressure. that pump is on its way out. catch it soon or expect a tow bill in your future

This is why I do not like the '01 and newer interiors. You do not know exactly what your oil pressure reading is. Just a couple of lines and one of them is red. I would suspect though that the levels are the same though as the '00 and lower. I would believe that the line above the L mark is about 20psi, but I could be wrong. My 3.9 does this if it is hot outside and I have been running it high in the RPM levels, but I suspect mine is because of the high-volume oil pump. Because the pressure usually comes back up to 40+. What does it register when you are going down the road? I know mine stays at about 75-80psi. This makes me feel great. If it is at least 40+ I would not worry about it too much. Then again, you can never go wrong with Synthetics. I use Mobil 1. I have not had any problems with it.

'97 RC V6, 5spd, soon to be V8, 5spd!
Maybe not a 5-speed, but an automatic will work.

first thing to do if you ever doubt the factory pressure gage is check it with a mechanical gage. FSM says 6psi min @ idle with engine warm. 30-80psi @ 3k rpm enigine warm.

if i remember right 5w-30 is recommended weight for the 4.7. maybe try a different brand of oil & also different brand filter.

i got 02 durango w the 4.7 and the oil pressure reads the same... at idle after warming up the needle falls to the line past center and during driving its above center.... cold start its above center till it warms up.... makes no noise and have seen plenty others that do the same.... my 99 dakota with the 3.9 did the same and made noise while at idle

Mobil-1 5W-30 in summer and 0W-30 in winter.
Never seen the needle fluctuate one bit. Once the engine has been running for about 5 seconds, the PCM keeps the needle in the same spot regardless of engine RPM or temp.

The pressure is suspossed to drop at idle (for emmision reasons). Mine reads at the 3/4 mark when cold and when warm at running RPM, when at idle when warm it's at the 1/4 mark. Been like that since day 1.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. I love the truck. It runs very well other than the curiously low oil pressure. I will manually check the oil pressure. I am told that it is unique, in that according to the VIN # of my Dakota it is an R/T Dakota. Although it is a 4x4 truck...Curious. It does have the 2nd gen 4.7 with the posi rear end. It is quite fast for a 4x4 also.
