I have a 2001 Dakota 4.7 V8 extended cab 4x2. While in motion, if I press the brake for normal slowing/stopping, the truck "downshifts" harder than normal....almost a clunking sound. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does happen, it seems to be around 30 mph while slowing or stopping.

My knowledge in this area is limited, usually to the occasional brake job or oil change, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Not sure a code would appear on the down shift or back side of a shift. This is a first for me on this trany. A selinoid hanging up is illogical to me. But a piston valve in the valve body usually shows up either when going from forward to reverse or on a down shift. Should this be the case you must change the entire valve body as the piston walls will be scored or gouged. Not really a hard job to do. drop the trany pan and your looking right at it. If you have a good dealer you might get it done free if your warranty is gone. Friend of mine got his 94 Dodge ram changed for free at 94,000 miles.
I'm really not familiar with this trany. I'm working off my general knowledge from years of having my own shop. This trany came about after my time ended.
