Subject: gearbox to rack and pinion? IP: Logged
Message: i have a 99 5.2l 4x4. gearbox. the steering is getting a little loose and i was wondering if it is possible to go to rack and pinion on this setup from stock. and if anybody has done this. expieriences? what were they? and i know its the gearbox. i was just wondering if its worth it to adjust it, or buy a new one, or go rack and pinion. thanks for all input.

Message: Could it be the pitman arm that is causing the loose steering? Had that happen on my old 95.

Message: my 99 has rack and pinion. its a 2x4 though. just get the stuff from a 2x4 and modify it to fit.
they showed the correct way to set up rack and pinion on muscle car a few weeks ago.

Message: My '00 4x4 is rack and pinion, I'd guess a swap might not be too bad if that's what you really want. Older mopars were notorious for sloppy steering, many didn't realize they could be adjusted. I had the adjustment done on a '70 Coronet (my first car) and it made a big difference. That might be your simplest solution.

Message: thanks for the imput. i know its adjustable but im thinking for the long haul. and i dont want to adjust it every year or so. i know this might be the simplest solution but i was wondering if anybody actually did a swap like this.
so how lond did the cornet stay nice and tight? if it was your only time to adjust then i just might do that.
and have any tips to adjust. can i leave it in the vehicle and adjust it?
thanks guys.

Message: there should be an adjustment screw w/ locknut on the top fo the box near center. yes, you'll need to leave it in thr truck. not sure on which way you need to turn that screw to tighten it up though.

Message: Yes,it stayed tight for the couple of years I had the car. Just adjust enough to take the slop out. I've heard they can bind if you go too far, but I haven't seen that. Much easier than the swap you are contemplating.

it looks like it doesn't take much adjustment as Kowalski stated.
