Hi everyone...apparently my rear differential went bad on my dakota, and my brother-in-law, who is a mechanic, is going to fix it for me. But apparently, he needs to know the Backlash setting/measurement. Does anyone here know what it is? I will post what I know about my truck, any more info, just let me know, and I will try to get it.

Heavy Duty/Tow Package

Thanks in advance for any assistance. If he gets the measurement, its only a $1000 in parts instead of a $4-5000 garage repair.

On a 9 1/4 the ring gear backlash is 0.005-0.008".

Hmm about that 4000-5000 dollar price.

I just had to have my 9 1/4 inch rear differential rebuilt.

They replaced the bearings, ring and pinion and I had a limited slip differential put in.

Total cost with parts and labor was 1457.00 dollars at a local fix it shop.

Without the limited slip, the price would've been more like 1000 dollars I think as it was a 400 dollar part.

Yeah, that shouldn't cost $4-5000 anywhere. You can identify a 9 1/4 by the 12 bolt octagonal cover. The 8 1/4 cover is round, I think 10 bolts. Either one could be in your QC.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
