Subject: K&N air filter IP: Logged
Message: Hello,
I have a 2000 4.7 liter Dakota. Was thinking about buying a K&N stock replacement air filter. Just wondering what kind of horsepower/MPG increase I might see and if it is worth spending the money for.
Any ideas?

Message: I have a 2004 4.7L and I purchased a K&N drop in filter soon after I bought the vehicle and saw minimal gains. Probably not even noticeable. I still would recommend it for the long term $$$ savings and the potential for a small gain.
I now have a K&N cold air filter and still have seen minimal gains.

Message: no gains to be had, MPG or HP
the only increase you might see is
larger dust/dirt particles in your
engine causing more wear,
hold a K&N up to a light compared to quality stock filter element and you'll understand..
any gains felt are by the fewer dollars in your wallet, so your truck accelerates faster

Message: Based on dyno results,
I have to agree with the 'dude'
I too bought a K&N drop in, which is now part of my modified 'true' cold air intake.
But, the 4.7, somes with a great breathing air intake stock, unless you have other serious mods, like greater than HO cams, true duals, etc.

Message: If you look at the dyno charts from K&N you'll see the HP gains high up in the RPM range..where you'll almost never be.

Message: Thanks guy's
Due to the fact that I only use my truck as a pleasure vehicle, I'll stick with the stock filter.

Message: I dropped in a K&N in two trucks so far. Both are QC 4x4s with 4.7 autos / 3.55 gears.
2002 Ram - definate 2mpg benefit.
2004 Dak - not certain but my best is 25 mpg hiway, so it might help. I didn't do the same methodical test with this one.

Message: 2mpg. That is kind of hard to believe. If that is true then all the big 3 needs to do to meet 2012 emissions is drop in a K&N filter. There emmissions crisis averted. (sarcasm)

Message: Waste money ? I was aware it wasn't a power or milage improvement for my 4.7 when I bought mine years ago. But, since it's reusable, and I'll never have to buy another paper filter for as long as I own the truck - I'm saving money. Like so many other things, it pays to understand what you're getting into. The honest info about what it does, or doesn't do, has been on this site for many years.
