Subject: Punching out a 360 IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys! I'm planning on yanking the 318 out of my '93 club cab and dropping in a 360 with some balls! I'm wondering what is the biggest I can punch a 360 out to? I've heard that a 360 is a 318 ALREADY punched out to 360 and that you can't go any bigger and I've also heard that you can bore and stroke a 360 to somewhere around 400. I need help here folks. Although I'm a fair mechanic and have been to diesel school I have zero experience in high performance applications. Any and all KNOWLEDGABLE suggestions will be welcome. However, if you are guessing or if you are going to give me info that a friend of a friend gave you then please don't waste my time. I don't have the time nor the money to waste on bad advice. I'm sure you can understand. Thanks guys!

Message: Biggest I would recomend going .030" over and that doesnt get you far. A 4" mopar crank with a .030" bore will give you a 408.

Message: Unless your needing the extra bottom end torque, I'd stay with the 318, it will tur up faster and make just as much horsepower.
The loss as I said is torque, but it would be a lot cheaper to stay with the 318. That's your choice. You'll need a flexplate, torque converter, harmonic balance, and pcm if you swap. Stay away from the weld on weights for your torque converter, they are OK(and a lot cheaper), but not near as balanced.

Message: Unless of course... your going for the 360 crate motor... you'll be pushing almost 400 horse/lbs of torque from the get go. Of course, no A/C... And im not sure if its fuel injected or not.

Message: The 360 crate engines from Mopar are 380HP out of the box and it is carburated instead of fuel injected. Lots of dakota mechanics I've talked to say the Mopar crate engines are crap...where are you getting your 360 from? Your best bet is to find out out of a wrecked R/T where the engine is still in tact. Good luck on that though.

Message: I have heard many mixed feelings on 360's also.. Alot of the old school people said they always were and sill are a pig motor, but then again they are used to awsome power plants like the infamous 340....they suck too much gas for the ponies they role out I have heard many times....I would have to agree in saying that getting your 318 done is the way to go, but there again you will miss out on some torque.

Message: There are actually 4 mopar crate 360's right now, and one stroked to 402 crate. There is the MPI truck 360, the 300 hp 360, the 380 hp 360 and the new 395 hp 360. The 402 makes 435 hp. They don't make any crate 318's because the cost would be the same and the power would be less. Anybody who thinks a 380 or 395 hp motor is a pig is just confused. Even when best crate 360 was making 360 hp it could push a Duster to mid 12's, it would always win the crate motor shootouts hotrod would put together. It just doesn't work well with any of the factory feul injection setups. So you pretty much need to ditch the stuff controlled by the PCM. So you'd probably end up spending about $6000 by the time you were done, but I bet in order to get 435 HP out of the 318 you would spend more, and it would certainly require a blower, nitro, or turbo, or maybe all three!

Message: Will the crate Mopar 402 fit in a '99 Dakota? What problems would I encounter going from the automatic 318 to a manual 402?

Message: A 318 will nab 400hp at 6 grand with nothing more than a CompCams XE 268 cam, Performer RPM AirGap intake, nicely reworked 360 Heads, or Magnum heads, and a 750 Carb. It's been shown to do so in various write-ups over the past two years. 435HP at the flywheel does not require a blower, nitrous, nitro, or a turbo.

Mitchell. Specifics like what year the engine is....
Is it stock? Run-of-the-mill output is around 170hp. But these engines have huge potential with just a change in the cam, intake and carb.

Message: To answer the original question the factory suggest that you dont bore the magnum motors more than .040. The 360 is not a bored out 318.The 318 has a stock bore of 3.91 and even if bored .060 you would only get 328 cubic inches with the stock 3.31 stroke. The 360 has a standard bore of 4.00 with a 3.58 stroke. If it were bored to 4.04 with the stock crank it would have 367 ci.
In my 92 Dakota I have a 5.9 block that is bored .030 with a 4 inch crank which comes out to 408 cubic inch. The truck originally came with a 5.2 and a 518 automatic. The first change I made was to put a MP computor on the truck, not a real big gain. Then I changed the manifolds for Gibson headers, still no large increase.I finally pulled the 5.2 and replaced it with a stock 5.9 and kept the comp. and headers. The truck ran great, had great bottom end torque and got almost identical milage as the stock 5.2.I also added the single plane 2 barrel MPI intake from mopar on this engine,no appreciable difference. I tried a stock 5.9 computor out of a 95 dodge van and it ran about the same. You can use the computor out of any V8 Dakota, full size truck or full size van from 1992 through 1995 and it will work. They are common in junkyards and can be bought for little or nothing. 2 years ago I pulled the stock 5.9 and replaced it with the 4 inch stroker bored .030 and zero decked a set of Kieth Black pistons, pocket ported the heads and back cut the valves and put in a 520 lift comp cams hydraulic roller.Same intake and headers.Ran like a scalded dog, great low end torque, really scary midrange torque and remarkably gets within 2 mpg of the stock 5.2 if I keep my foot out of it.The original Dakota club cab got nailed from behind on 1/30/07 so I am in the process of transfering the engine and hopefully trans to a 1990 short bed standard cab truck that I had started to re-do.
To sum up,if you dont want to spend a lot of cash find a stock 5.9 and slam it into your truck without changing anything but the flexplate(available from MP already balanced for 5.9)at worst you might have to get a junkyard comp.and you get 40 extra cubes and a lot more torque without a lot of hassel

Message: Would any of these motors be smog legal for those states that require it? Some states's laws will not permit an older engine ( like a 440 ) to be put in a newer vehicle. You would have to replace it with the same yr motor, if you had been in an accident for instance. Ane the engine would have to meet all curent state emission and pollution standards too. So if you live in Calif. or one of these other suckie states you would be out of luck.
