Subject: Automatic Transmission Flush or Fill?
IP: Logged

Message:
I know a lot of shops try to get consumers to have their tranny flushed instead of drained and filled.

I have heard both pro's and con's to each, and was wondering what experiences Dakota owners have.

Thanks!

2000 4.7 liter automatic.

I just go for the drain and fill, no flush

my theory is ( and i'm sure some may disagree) is that if you flush and fill from the first service interval then keep doing it otherwise i would not. like i said, that's what i would do.

Thanks for the reply's

About 3 years ago at 30,000 miles I had the tranny fluid flushed. This was the first AT service I had done on the truck, and have not had any problems.

Not sure what the Dodge Dealership recommends, but like you say there are a lot of different opinions on this.

3qts of clean oil + 2 qts of dirty oil = 5 qts of dirty oil.

Go for the flush.

I just had my tranny flushed at 100,000 miles after lowering my truck and it runs like a champ. I would flush it, just be careful not to get fluid on the belt and pulleys like i did or it will squeak like something AWEFUL haha.

I've also heard that if you have a lot of miles (like 150+), and don't know if the tranny has ever been serviced, doing a flush or even just dropping the pan and refilling could cause more problems due to varnish buildups, etc. Changing the ATF could throw things outta wack. However from the mileage postings above flushing should be okay.

Just had my 99 R/T drained for the first time, only 28K on her, the fluid was almost as clean as the day it was first filled. It would depend on mileage, if high miles flush otherwise drain,
use ATF-4

I have had mine flushed and filled at the dealer once. I did the second one myself. No problems with the tranny.

I say:

Drop the pan change the filters and flush with new fluid.
