Subject: thermostat/coolant change? IP: Logged
Message: Wanted some ideas on how often to change out coolant and maybe thermostat change.
I have a 2000 4.7 liter with 49K miles and have done nothing with the coolant system as of yet.
Have not had any problems, such as engine running hot, just thinking it might be time for some cooling system service with summer almost here.
Thanks!

Message: The t-stat will be the easiest t-stat you have ever removed. And you don't even need a new gasket. It's an o-ring. And it's on the BOTTOM of the front of the engine accessable by getting UNDER the truck and removing that plastic splash gaurd if you have one.
However, I have never noticed any benefit from changing the t-stat. I have a 180 in it, and it does seem to stay slightly lower on the gauge, but don't expect any power from it.
If I had it to do again, I'd just leave the 195 t-stat in there. When you work the engine on hills, towing, etc, the temp will be the same weather you have a 180 or a 195.

Message: I prefer to change my antifreeze at the very least every 3 yrs., actually more often as I tow with the truck.
You would be surprised how quickly the antifreeze loses it cooling properties when run hard. I don't have many corrosion issues either.

Message: I do a flush and fluid change every 2-3 years. I usually change the thermostat at the same time.

Message: Thanks for the info guy's
One quick question. I don't have the resources to do a flush, only a drain and fill.
Do you just drain and fill the radiator only, or try to drain the engine block too?
The manual does have a picture of the engine block coolant drain.
Thanks!
