lastnight i changed my oil with royal perple and same with the coolent. as the night went on it got down to 29 out side so the first thing i did when i woke up was let my truck warm up. as soon as it started light came on with a smell of gas. also it was runing really rich. can anyone tell me what this might be? i know its not just a gas cap.

yea i thought the same thing but it has a new gas cap on there. would that make a small gas smell to?

you could check the connections on the charcoal canister underneath the cab. these rubber fittings crack over time but usually trip a P0455 Large emmissions Leak.

got a new cap and i reset the code and about 5 mins later the light came back on. there is alot of condensation coming out the tail pipe. its almost like a trickle. and it has a small oder of gas.

Had the same issue on my 01 4.7. Check the Evap test port lines under the hood near the battery. The lines on mine were shredded and dried out.

I just fixed this recurring problem on my 2002 QC. I replaced the flimsy 5/16" vapor hose with 5/16" fuel hose. This shouldn't happen again under the hood...
What's your left foot doing?

HAd the same code on my 04. It was the charcoal canister. P0442 is usually not the gas cap. There's another code for gas cap that signifies a much smaller evap system leak, P0442 means a bigger one that might mean a bad EVAP line or charcoal canister. I went through 2-3 gas caps, resetting the code each time only to watch it come back a hundred miles later, before I just took to the dealer and ponied up for a diagnostis and canister replacement.

I had a p0456(evap leak very small) that grew to a P0442(evap leak small). After reading posts here I checked vapor lines via underhood label. Short 5/16 hose, between service port and hardline, replaced. $0.97 fix. Thanks Modain!
No OBDII reader, Autozone etc can't check in CA. I heard the shop owners have been whining.
Will the code(s) clear on own or should I Batt diconnect?
BTW, had same issue with a 92 Cherokee 4.0.
Save $ check the hose before you buy a gas cap!

MIL light off! P0456 and P0442 still in memory. Planning some behind the dash work, adding XM, soon so will wait till then to disconnect battery.

I get 0442 and 0445 errors. Where is the canister and what does it look like?
If you turn your key on and off three times leaving it on the last time the codes will show up without a fancy expensive shop visit.

The code points you in the right direction but certain codes could mean any one of a number of different things on a list are wrong.
