Subject: Which Oils IP: Logged
Message: Could everyone give their opinion on which oils and lubes to use in their tranny, diffs and transfer cases.
I'm thinking Mobil1 w/ dexron3 fully synthetic in the transfer case, Lucas 75w90 in the diffs, and royal purple in the tranny.
Any thoughts on all of this, I run fully synth for engine oil so I want to keep everything a full synthetic.
I live in Canada so availability might change for some oils and lubes.
I have a 99' slt,318, 4x4,8.25 rear diff,dana 35 front,NV231hd tansfer case, and auto Tranny, w/175000 Kilometers.
And please no cracks about 'using astro glide or K.Y'.
Thanks in advance.

Message: Use commonly available products from 'Canadian Tire' and replace them more often, synthetic or not.
if you off-road a lot and submerge your drivetrain in deep water, you wont think twice about draining and re-filling your axles ASAP
with easily available 'off the shelf' lubes.
When running expensive lubes, you might not feel like dumping 75$ worth of oil out.. By not doing so are creating even more expensive long- term damage in your drivetrain.
If no deep water is encountered, I consider a yearly drain/refill of all axles/transm/transfer case/power steering, 'regular' maintenance for any off-road rig.

Message: AM$OIL..This is what I mean Mikey..
after taking a dunk off-road, would you rather
order 12$/quart oil plus wait for it
to get delivered, while you keep driving around
with the muck in there.
or stop by any 'Canadian Tire' on your way back and pick up their 6$/quart oil an drain your axles ASAP before the water and sand wears your drivetrain.
By doing a yearly change, you won't notice
(your drivetrain either) the difference
between mineral and synthetic gear oils,
only your wallet. (no MPG miracles..)

Yo 911mike,
FYI - You can buy 2 bottles of Amsoil for $12
and still have money left over in your pocket.
Amsoil synthetic oil costs less than Mobil1 EP.

That's the only one that I'm really worried about,
cause I here people saying that "it doesn't shift right" if you don't use the proper oil.
Also (now that Amsoil is dead and buried), does anybody have any thoughts on 'Lucas' brand oils.
Thanx

Message: let's see Mr. AMSOIL, by the infos on this website,
http://www.worldsbestoil.ca/
the price for SVG 75W-90 is 11.20$ a quart,
(prices in US dollars too, as of tonite: 1.00 USD = 1.14728 CAD)
the "preferred customer program" mentions "up to 35% discount"
so lets see if this sounds right,
$11.20 USD x 14% ($1.57) = $12.77 CAD
at best I get 35% off
$12.77 -35% ($4.47) = $8.30 CAD / quart
add to that the shipping costs
waiting for it to get here
(hassles if anything has to be returned:
wrong product, damaged / leaky quarts etc)
and perhaps a minimum yearly purchase
to maintain my 'prefered customer' status.
I still think "off the shelf" brand names
from the local Canadian Tire store make more
sense unless your ordering a large quantity
of oil ahead of time 'just in case'.
now lets see what math you come up with ??

DODGE DEALERSHIPS NOW CARRY AMSOIL !!!
This was posted by Sephiroth 3/20/2004
V8 Forum --- Subject: New Chrysler Product?!
Message posted by Sephiroth:
"I went in to have my brakes checked today, and when I walked into the garage the first thing I saw made my jaw hit the floor. My local dealership now uses and sells AMSOIL products!! They've got it posted on a big banner over the service-desks. GM may not have been able to get it for their 'vettes, but obviously Dodge was able to, or they found out how awesome it is and started buying at regular price! When I go in for a tranny-filter, fluid, and gasket change next week, it's getting filled with AMS."
Sephiroth went on to state:
"This is at the Raleigh, NC dealership, Al Smith Buick, Dodge, Mazda. I told the guy at the desk I was astounded to see them using AMSOIL and that I had been using it for a while now. After he rode in the truck he said he'd be switching next oil-change in his Ram.
As for me, I've got it in the engine, and I'll have it in the tranny soon! Next up are the differentials. After that I need to get a dyno just for curiosity's sake. IF I get 3-5hp form the differential, and God knows how much from the engine and tranny, that'll be enough without any heavy mods. Well, for all I do anyway. If it is a significant gain, I'll post the results."

Message: sorry I cant give any opinions on how Amsoil products PERFORM because I have never used any of them. I'm sure most are at par or better than MOBIL 1 but it's their marketing/sales gimmicks that will forever turn me away.
-----------------------------------------
but I can tell you about my experience with Redline lubricants,
have used them for about 5 years as a mechanic/crew chief for late model stock car team with great results in the engine/drivetrain, very little wear for such severe usage.
I also use their lubes in my Dodge Ram,
'5W-30' eliminated the '4.7l cold engine tick' (tried 5W-30 MOBIL-1..engine very noisy..)
'MTL' in the 5-speed shifts great even when cold with no gear whine when hot
'75W-90' (my manual recommends 75W-140) has show absolutely no wear metals on the diff magnet, LSD additive already blended in, no chatter.
and no Redline does not sponsor me at all,
I pay for it just like everybody else,
perhaps a little more expensive than others but well worth it IMO.
--------------------------------------------
Ozark: if my truck had an automatic transmission,
even if there are lot of high quality lubes available that 'may meet the standard' , I'd stick to a Dodge approved ATF+4
(like their own MOPAR ATF+4) fluid to avoid any repair/warranty problems.
actually one of the reasons I ordered my truck with manual transmission..

Message:
I stand corrected on the earlier price discussion.
I was referring to synthetic motor oil and not gear lube, and
I was talking U.S. Dollar prices and not Canadian prices.
I have listed both below.
Amsoil Preferred Customer Prices for our basic Gear Lube are:
U.S. DOLLAR PRICES
As low as $6.20/qt. or $23.60/gal (translates to $5.90/qt)
Prices are slightly higher for our top-of-the-line Gear Lubes.
CANADIAN DOLLAR PRICES
As low as $7.75/qt. or $29.20/gal (translates to $7.30/qt)
Prices are slightly higher for our top-of-the-line Gear Lubes.
Thank you,
Steven

Offered only as an FYI ---
Dale Earnhart Inc. and AMSOIL Gear Lube
AMSOIL Severe Gear gear lube outperforms every conventional, synthetic and performance gear lube on the market. Dale Earnhart Inc. has recently tested this gear lube in the differentials of their race cars and it is the ONLY gear lube they have tested with has solved their performance problems. AMSOIL reported that one of the mechanics on the race team remembered AMSOIL after they exhausted testing other gear lubes that all failed. They then tested the AMSOIL Severe Gear lube and it solved their problem.

Message: Dealerships and service dept. can easily send a sample from your transmission and wait for the results before starting warranty work.
An oil analysis can save Dodge a lot of money by deniying your expensive warranty claim if an 'un-approved' ATF lubricant is found,
I may take a chance with my manual trans and rear axle
because these are simpler mechanicaly and usually 'less prone' to failure
but in an expensive automatic transmission (with internal electronic too perhaps),
I would'nt chance it.
