 Subject: Exhaust and Air Intake?

I just got a 2001 dodge dakota crew cab. It has a 4.7L and i am looking for the best exhaust and air intake options. i was thinking a Gibson cat-back and K&N air intake. Good idea or any other suggestions?

There's various opinions about K&N air filters,
(and other oiled foam type filters)
hold one up to a light and you will see bigger
'holes' than a regular paper filter, and that cant be too good, bigger holes = bigger particles getting thru.
Wanting more flow is one thing, (any gains by a K&N would be at higher RPM's)
but getting scuffed up cylinders/piston rings in return is not worth it.
(engine oil gets contaminated faster too)
some manufacturers (GM I think) have sent service notes that using a K&N will void warranty work on
MAF and other intake related sensors that might get contaminated by the oil contained in the filter.
I purchased a K&N a while back for my 4.7,
after a couple of weeks I removed it and sold it
no gains noticed,
maybe worth it on a race engine
when looking for every possible HP gain
but not on a truck engine IMO.

4.7's have a very efficient intake stock... if you're looking for performance get a full exhaust and high output cams.

Have a buddy with a Gibson cat back sideswept single exit on his 5.4 F series. I'm not too impressed with the sound, kind of coarse and raspy and not deep enough. I have Magnaflow 15877, SI/DO. It's deep, smooth, and howls on hard accelaration but isn't obnoxious. I'm very happy with it except it'll be next to impossible to point the pipes straight out the back if you have a tow hitch that hangs too low.

Actially scratch that I believe his Gibson is the NAscar-type dual rectangular opening style with side exit in front of the right rear tire. Still sounds like crap though.

When you ask for other suggestions, I wonder what your intent is ? If trying to make more power, you'd get more bang for the buck with cams, more ignition advance, and geting rid of the restrictive y-pipe. Or did you just want more noise, with a touch of high rpm power ? Let us know what you are looking for.

HO cams, like ryan said, or hotter would be a good place to start. Lots of info has been posted on this. Also go with more spark advance, whether fron a custom falsh, or the Superchip that a lot of the guys seem to like - especially if an automatic. Geting rid of the restrictive stock y-pipe will help too.
