Subject: 1.7 Rocker Arms - Cheap IP: Logged
Message: I just read about an interesting upgrade. We've talked about 1.7 rockers here many times. I've been considering it. But the $400'ish price tag left me a little cold.
Then I read that the V-10 rocker arms are 1.7, and a direct bolt on to the other Magnum engines. No other parts needed. No mods to the valve covers.
A quick web search found them at DodgeParts.com for $5.07 each. Including gaskets, that's under $100. They are not roller, but you really don't need rollers with a stock cam.
I need to do a plenum gasket change soon. So I'll be changing the rocker arms at the same time. You know, while I'm at it. Might as well put in new fulcrums, too.

Message: ok so its a cheaper alternative
and will net some gains
just dont forget you would see more
using roller rockers
as it's not just the increase in ratio
its also reducing drag
hence
even replacing the 1.6 stock
with 1.6 rollers nets gains
with that said if i'm doing a budget build
or on a budget & looking to a a few more ponies and trq.
i would go the V-10 rocker arm route for sure

Message: go with the 1.7s. but if youever get a cam make sure you replace the rockers to 1.6 rollers or stock ones. i had a 4.55 lift cam but thought it was a 435 and when i installed the rollers i bent every valve i had!!

Message: Just tell the cam grinder that you are running 1.7's and they will grind the cam accordingly.

Message: Yes, full rollers will give a little more power because of the reduced friction and drag. But those gains are very small at lower rpm's. It's a rare day when my truck see's >4.5K rpm's. It's a commuter and tow vehicle, not my track car.
To me, that small amount of performance isn't worth $300.
My track car, OTOH, does have a full roller valve train with beehive springs. That little bit of performance is certainly worth the cost there.

Message: .boB I just finished putting 14 of the 16 viper rockers on my 99 318 4x4 (2 of the rocker arm bolts broke I am waiting for 2 new bolts now) but just to warn you, do not use the viper pedestals or pivots as they are too short. Also DO NOT OVER TORQUE THE ROCKER ARM BOLTS THEY ARE EXTREMELY FRAGILE, as I said I broke 2 of them. Torque spec is 21 ft/lb.
I will let everybody interested know if i get a noticable power gain when i get the other 2 rockers on.

Message: It was deffinately worth 100 bucks! It gave my 318 a noticeable gain in power, specially in the midrange area. Hopefully it will gain some more power when i can figure out how to make a k&n cold air kit waterproof (it's a 4x4 that likes playing in the mud and water generally doesn't play very nice with pistons) and get a throttle body for the truck. And i still agree with .boB my 4x4 needs more low end power than top end and i don't have enough money to make this truck fast and good off road at the same time, the roller rockers aren't worth an extra 300 dollars, at least, right now any way.
99 Dakota Sport 4x4 318 auto rc/sb
3in Rancho lift
33x12.50-15 General Grabber AT2 on stock 15x8s

1.7 ratio Viper rocker arms
Soon to be hanson winch bumper to put the warn 9500lb winch on thats been sitting in my garage for 3 months now
Also soon to be 4.56 gears and a factory jeep trac-lok for the front Dana 35 to go mith the factory trac-lok already in the rear

Message: I've got some Comp Cams 1.7 roller tip rockers, that have zero miles on them. I blew a head gasket, and upgraded the RRs in the process. When I got it torn down, I discovered bigger problems with the block. I'm going for a forged crate motor. I'll be parting out the motor. I bought from KRC just two monthes ago. I'd sell them for less than I bought them for. I also have the NASCAR pushrods, for a 5.9.

Message: Yes reuse the stock pedestals they feel a little loose at first but once you start tightening them up they get tighter like they are supposed to.
Have had mine in for nearly 2 weeks now and no problems or noises of any kind and like i said deffinately worth 100 bucks!
