 Subject: 93 that slips in reverse

Anyone got any ideas as to what I can check before sending my 93 to a mechanic? It was slipping badly in reverse and wouldn't go unless you really punched the gas, and sometimes wanted to go foreward instead of in reverse. We disconnected the negative battery cable today (& reconnected it), and now it refuses to go in reverse at all. It shuts off when put in reverse. Any ideas? I wanna see if there's any chance I can fix this myself.
