Message: While you would potentially be able to go slightly faster at lower RPMs, I do not believe it would reduce your mpg. I think that you may be able to do somethings like that and possibly trick your trip computer, but smaller tires are going to get you better miles per gallon.

Message: first off you'll have more rolling mass. second, you'll actually lower that 3.92:1 ratio some.
12mpg is low, i'd start looking at the O2 sensors.

Message: Yeah, that's pretty bad milage for a 2WD 4.7.
Just checked to see how much the cold winter air was reducing my milage and I'm down about 1 mpg to 14. That's with added weight form a plow frame, fifth wheel hitch, etc.; and the extra drag of 4WD. You should be doing better than that. Changing gearing (tire size could have similar effect) with the 4.7 can give some surprising results. I went from 15 mpg with a 3.55 gear to almost 16 mpg with 4.10; then back to 15 with a more agressive lugged tire of the same size. You should start by figuring out why you only get 12 mpg. The difference won't be our driving habbits unless you're stuck in traffic a lot; and nothing would help that.

Message: Those 65 series tires seem a bit wide to me. I find my 70's plenty wide. Plus check your air pressures. About 3/4 of max and all the same.
