Subject: won't shift into overdrive IP: Logged
Message: i have a 92 dakota with a 5.2 and when i first start and take off it won't go into over drive but once i've driven for 5 miles or so it shifts into overdrive fine can anyone help

Message: It's supposed to do that after a cold start. The tranny has to achieve a minimum operating temperature before the overdrive will engage or converter will lock up.

Message: actually the engine needs to be 60 degress F before it will allow overdrive. if its taking really long to shift into overdrive on a cold start, then you most likely have a lazy temp sensor. check for codes first. but im sure im right.
Another thing, does the rig get warm at a normal pace? or does it take FOREVER to get warm? If thats the case, then your t-stat is stuck wide open and the engine is taking forever to get past 60 degrees....
