Subject: headers= trouble? IP: Logged
Message: is putting a set of edelbrock shorty headers on my 97 5.2 more trouble than its worth? I am looking for the best tone possible while still running a custom y pipe and a cat. please comment if you have put headers on yours and how it went.

Message: I had Midas put a set of JBA coated headers on my '98 Dakota 5.2L. The factory manifolds looked bad and always leaked. The shortys looked a 100 times better and sealed to the head well. However, I noticed no real improvement in sound or performance. Most of the guys here say that replacing the "Y" pipe will give you a better power increase than headers. If I replace the manifolds on my '04 4.7L, it will be more for looks than anything else. YMMV.

Message: Stock size on the head pipe was 1-3/4" on my 98 Dak 5.2 . I upped them with 2". Can't say I noticed any improvement. I'm always on the gas. I put them into 3" single with a CarSound cat.
Power feels good after driving my Subaru AWD.

Message: An alternative to headers on a 5.2 Magnum is a set of 1992-93 factory exhaust manifolds with 1/4" larger inside diameter ports. They run about $75 from a boneyard.

Message: how much did that cost you bmac? I would like to do something like that except with 3 inch pipe is that a good idea? ultimately i want to run a 3 inch Y pipe into a 3 inch straight pipe no cat with a AT3030 muffler but Im having a hard time finding a shop that will remove the cat.

Message: I didn't remove the cat, I got a new CarSound cat.
I went with a 2" head pipe, not a 3". You don't want too big a head pipe! Nor will you find anyone willing to make a 3" Y pipe!
I had mine built at different times, first the 3" section to the tail, then the head pipe. Can't remember the cost, think it was $185 for the main, then $150 for the head pipe.
