I'm looking at getting a travel trailer and found a great deal on one, but much larger than I was looking for. It's a dual tandem 25' with empty weight at 3900. My Dakota is a 99 5.2 litre. I can't give much on my tow package, other than I have one, minus the brake controller. I've owned the Dakota for four years but I've only used the hitch once, and that was to tow a flatbed with minimal weight. Any information that can be given to me would be great. Thanks.

As I understand it, ALL Dodge trucks can pull 2,000 pounds from the bumper w/o additional hitch hardware.

My 97 Dak (w/318) is supposed to be able to jerk 7,000 # if I fit the appropriate hitch hardware.

There are a lot of cheap, junk hitches out there; mostly intended to support a pair of tennis balls in a rubber scrotum as far as i can tell<G>

If there are no labels or other identifying marks on your hitch hardware, I think I might take the truck to a trailer store or truck specialist and pay them $50 to inspect it.

The cost for having hitch failure is awfully damn high; even locally. 2,000 miles from home it's killer!

Evan - since you have the tow package you don't need to consider mac's advice. That package includes a good quality receiver. Hook up a brake controler and consider a weight distributing hitch.

Absolutely. Look for an extended pin box to tow a fifth wheel with a shortbed, or you could need a hitch with a slider for tight turning. Weight will depend on your gearing. The tow package includes extra transmission cooling - add that if your truck doesn't have the tow package.
