Subject: Plenum Install ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I am changing my plenum gasket and plate to an alum. setup. Spare intake so the truck is together yet, but the intake will be ready at tear down time.

Question is
Is there enough room under the intake to put the alum. plate + an insulating steel plate???

Idea is to insulate the floor of the intake from hot oil and heat transfer.
Anyone try this or know if there is enough room?
thanks

Intake manufacturers quit doing that because it didn't really work. If done real well, there's an air gap to block the heat. But it doesn't take long for that air gap to heat up, and then transfer the heat to the air charge. You have to have some way to vent the hot air from that gap to maintain the barrier.

Edelbrock solved the problem with their Air Gap manifolds. Which is really a modern version of some old Dodge manifolds.

Have you considered having the bottom of the manifold ceramic coated?

That is what I was thinking of, but didn't want the ceramic exposed to the engine. I was going to ceramic coat the bottom of the alum. plate and the inside of the steel plate. Double barrier and not exposed - but before I consider it, is there enough room inside the valley for both?

Yes, there's room for both.

Thanks, this way when I go to do it, it will be just an intake swap - with very custom mods to it.

Not even sure mine is leaking, though there is a ping I can't get rid of using regular gas - the timing is bumped up some, but it didn't ping a few years ago - also a slight mpg drop - with the miles on it I figure I might as well change it out.
Thanks again.

A while ago I was reading a magazine article. One of the tricks they used was to put a thermal barrier coating on the bottom of the manifold, and a heat stransfer coating on the top. Interesting idea, but they didn't really say if it worked or not.

Well I won't have time to wait on the ceramic coating, so I will use a heat sleeve between the two pans.
It won't purely insulate, but will cut way down on the heat transfer.

Now I just have to do it. Then move on to the next thing to try - fuel warming :)

Need some mpg during cold weather, so it has to be either warm air or warm the fuel some.
