I'll catch hell for that one ;-)
My current 4.7, an 01, has over 118,000 care free miles.

Message: the 5.2 318 is one of the most reliable motors ever made. so much easier to work on too if you want to upgrade. the 318 has been around since the 60's, that should tell you something. and yes i know the 4.7 replaced it, however the 4.7 is a german design and the 5.2 is an american design, and i for one would rather have the 318.

Message: Funny how they made the 4.7, BEFORE DC merged w/ Benz. German design? Cool, no wonder why it runs so well and has no maintenance other than oil, filters, etc.

Message: ive seen more than a few 318's hit way over 250k with regular oil changes. my 318 has 132,000 rather beaten miles, been hydrolocked, overheated, and still pulls like new compression numbers.
If i had to pick between the 2, I would BY FAR take the 318. unless the 99 dakota is a POS.

Message: the 4.7 hasn't been around long enough to prove itself. They are pretty strong motors.I have a 318 but i would of bought a 4.7 if I had found the right deal.318's are easier to work on,and easier to upgrade performance wise.4.7 probably gets a little better gas miliage.

Message: For daily driving/fun with not much upkeep is the 4.7L. You will not be dissapointed. If you plan to spend some money on upgrades at some point, get the 5.2L. Stock 4.7 > 5.2, modded 5.2 > 4.7L. The 5.2 will last over 200k miles easily if you change the oil. 318 mods cost way less than a 4.7 and is much easier to work on.
If I were making a project/fun truck or a secondary vehicle, I'd choose the 5.2. If it's my daily driver, take the 4.7L.

Is the 4.7?
Mine is.
If it's down to these 2 trucks, then I'd look for a 4.7 manual tranny.

Message: Some things on the 4.7 are actually EASIER to work on than the 318 believe it or not.
The intake manifold can be removed without removing the fuel injectors. The exhaust manifold can be removed without removing spark plugs or wires (because they are not there). The Coolant t-stat can be changed in 10 minutes and no gasket to replace/skrape. etc etc
Also on a 4.7 you can enjoy revs to 6k RPM STOCK before shifting as opposed to a stock 318
With a SuperChips tuner I see as high as 7k revs.
If you want SERIOUS mods. Obviously there are more parts to buy for the 5.2 than the 4.7 that's just the way it goes and you can thank DC for keeping a lock on many STOCK replacement parts!
If you get a 5 speed stick 4.7 they are "said" to do as well in the 1/4 mile as a 5.9 auto.
I know stock 4.7 auto 2WD Dakotas are FASTER in the 1/4 than stock 5.7 auto Hemi RAMS. My 4WD Dak was always within a few tenths in the 1/4 of (stock) Hemi Rams.

Message: people say the 4.7 gets better mileage, but ive heard that its basically the same. its called a more efficient engine because it produces comparable numbers out of a smaller engine, which is true based on advances in technology and what not. But DC says that the 4.7's peak torque of 295 Lbs-ft is @3600 rpm. Now im not trying to say it doesnt have low end balls, mostly because i dont have a 4.7 so dont flame me there. But the 5.2 peaks off with 295 Lbs-ft(sometimes 300) @3200RPM. If i had to pick a better TRUCK engine, i would pick the 5.2L. Bigger displacement means it will take more abuse and more low end.
Now about the 4.7 being as fast as the 5.9 in a quarter. Sure it is. Because the 5.9 is tuned to be a truck engine with low end. not top end like the 4.7. slap a different cam and reflash the computer for more high end and the game may be different.

Message: I'm looking at Dakotas because my s-10 didn't have enough in the towing department. It did fine tell u tried to run 75mph it was a dog then but i have no use for a full size pickup. I also like to play off road so I'd probably lift it. my friend has a 01 with 33 and no gears and it does good. i buy a truck to use it not let it sit and look pretty

Message: jayb - Bigger displacement doesn't always mean a motor will take more abuse. For one example, the old mopar slant six would take more abuse than just about any motor made.
The 4.7 tows quite well, several of us here have no trouble towing trailers of 5500 lbs or more. Bottom line is that both are great motors for a Dak; might just want to choose which truck seems the better deal overall.

Message: different strokes for different folks. i guess i like proven reliability over the years. I never said you couldnt tow good with a 4.7. i towed 6500lbs+ with my 5.2 and had no problem on any hill(in northwest washington state).
no matter what i say, someone with a 4.7 is gonna come on here and say its the best thing ever blah blah blah. overall you should probably go with the better deal.

Message: jayb - Just because someone says the 4.7 is good doesn't mean they are attacking your beloved 5.2. I mostly just wanted to clarify your misconception that bigger displacements will take more abuse. For another example, a 318 will commonly outlast a 440. The 4.7 has been out for about 8 years now, and there are many high milage motors out there still running strong. Too much blah, blah, blah for you ?
