Subject: front end driveline noise/vibes IP: Logged
Message: Hey ya'll,
its been a long while since i have been on here...
but i need a bit of help from everyone.
i have a 2001 5.9 4wd quad cab.......
about 6 months ago i noticed i had developed a roaring growling noise from front end area while driving above 30 mph's.....it makes me think i have snow/mud tires on the front....i have done a few things that i felt could of been the culprit but needed to be done anyways....rotated and balanced the michelin m/s's and replaced front rotors and pads.
neither of these helped at all...not suprised!
i did check all fluids/gearboxes and tried to check front bearings with the old tire wobble trick while jacked up....i know this prolly doesnt qualify for good inspection of bearings...
the truck has 110,000 miles on it....
any help before i make it to repair shop would gratefully appreciated!!!!!!!!!

Message: Grab each axle shaft, and see if you can feel any play. A torn boot often makes this a no brainer, but if the boot was torn it shouldn't last for 6 months like you describe. Once they lose the grease with a torn boot, they fail pretty quick.

Message: Best way to tell is to get all four wheels off of the ground and put it in 4wd and with the help of a friend run the truck up to 30mph in the air. With the truck running at 30mph get under the truck (be carefull of all moving parts at all times) and using a mechanics stethescope see where the noise is coming from, it is the only real way to tell where a noise is coming from unless you have access to chassis ears. You can get a mechanics stethescope at a napa, autozone, pep boys, advanced auto, and most places that tools are sold for right around $10.
Might want to pay special attention to front differential bearings may be coming from that. Try putting it in 4wd and driving around 30mph see if the noise is different than in 2wd, if it is than it is more than likely the front diff. If it doesnt change than it is probably the wheel bearings, they don't have to be loose to make noise.

Message: I have the exact same prob, 01 quad 4.7 4WD.
My guess is CV joint. Sounds a lot different than the crackling, popping that FWD Honda and Subaru (take your pick) type CV joints make, but the Dak is a lot more car and the axle assembly a lot different than transaxle mount trannys.
Taking it to the shop today. Will post the outcome when the diagnosis is in.

Message: Back from the shop, it was the FL wheel bearing assembly. On the 4WD models, its a combined HUB/Bearing etc. Cost about 135 for aftermarket, or about 200 for Mopar part OEM. All said and done, $ 375 for the repair and it's quiet as a mouse.
Always get my used parts back. That sucker was grinding something fierce, it's even hard to turn by hand. Probably even get better mileage now, maybe 16 mpg (lol).

Message: HEY GUYS......
its been a while but......i got a diagnosis from a local repair shop here in town....he said its my FL hub bearing assembly....they want $489 p&l to do the job ...with a 12 month/24k warranty.
called dealer and they said they could do it for @ 370$...but only half the warranty and a longer drive.
Is this a driveway job?
any thought or recomendations?
