I had a 97 V6 4X4 Dakota, I dident like the lack of power so I got rid of my truck, I am thinking about getting a quad cab Dakota with a V8, is there anything to look out for? certain years or engines that I should avoid. I found a 2000 Dodge Dakota 4x4 Quad Cab with 50,000 miles wiht a 4.7 for $10,900, is that a good deal?

Check the Blue Book prices.
$11k seems kinda high, given that Dodges don't hold their value, and the one you want is 7 years old.

Some people out there think just because there 90 model has under a 100 grand and not had a new engine a few times is made of gold...lol. The dodge may have just 50 thousand miles and thats not alot for 7 years but its not just the miles. My uncle has a 88 1 ton chevy with under 80 thousand miles but anyway you look at its 19 years old but on its 2nd engine. I have had chevys go 300 thou. Good year dodge, good engine minus my 2001 had 140 thousand and the oil pump went out. It ran great until then and i really wanted my 2001 with the 408 now i got it. I wish it didnt go 140 thou...lol... lot of miles and alot of driving but thats why i got the truck to put miles on her.

kbb.com is one place to check the value - that's the Kelley blue book site.

Marv, what are you talking about the dakota not holding value? I have a '97 4x4 with 135k on it. Private party value Fair = 5620, good = 6365, excelent = 6925.

With the exception of the paint on the hood, you would be hard pressed to find a '97 is as good a condition as mine. That being said, I would still call it fair condition.

Also, jevanof never said where he was looking. Private party for that truck in this area in good condition is worth 9500 and retail of 11,465. I personally would try and save a few thousand and buy it from an individual. If you are looking at this truck in some guys front yard, I would offer him 9k and see what he says.

crow is right just look for yourself on KBB.com and if you like this truck then get it. Offer less than what they want and if you can show them the green..it has been known to do some talking of its own...lol...with it in hand you may not have to say anything.

Always offer less than asking price! You can't insult a car dealer and most private sellers want to see the thing sold. If they get pissed at the offer, what have you lost? If they take the low offer what have you gained? $$$$
