Subject: R/T overheating IP: Logged
Message: I have a 2000 R/T. The problem started with the water pump leaking, so I changed the water pump. Then the belt was slipping and causing a high pitched noise, so I replaced the belt. I no longer have a coolant leak, nor a high pitched squealing noise, but the truck is still overheating. When I start the truck the temperature gauge slowly makes its way to the red zone. So that led me to believe that it was either the thermostat or the fan clutch, and I have replaced both and still no progress. The truck overheats when it is in idle. I haven't taken it out for a test drive, because I don't want to push it just yet. I have also checked for signs of cracked heads, but I don't believe that’s the case. Any advice?

Message: make sure the aux electric fan is coming on. it should come on with demand for a/c and engine temmp above 130 deg or rneinge temp @ 210 deg.
from what you're saying it's not. check the relay and fan motor itself. also, try changing the radiator cap. the radiator may also be partially clogged.

Message: I did notice that you said you replaced the Clutch Fan, not put in an Electric Fan. I would take the time to flush the whole cooling system and also double check that new thermostat. I've heard of new thermostats being bad from the get go. The new Clutch Fan, do you hear it roar when you first start the truck? Do you hear it roar when it approches 180 degrees? Double check to make sure you don't have any obstructions for the airflow through the radiator. Thermostat - Did you put in a 192 degree? Reason I ask that is that the lower the temporature, the faster the water goes through the radiator when it is cooling in hot weather, thus cooling the engine less. If you have no thermostat, the more chance of the vehicle over heating in hot weather. Continuing on, You want to check to see if you may have blockage in the radiator preventing cooling. Lastly, there is a short hose going from the waterpump that bypasses water to other parts of the engine. If you didn't replace it, it may be pinched not supplying cooling to the remainder of the engine. The only other thing I can think of is, your truck actually overheating? What I mean from that, is your Sending Unit could be sending false indications. You didn't indicate where you live and if you actually have sufficiant antifreeze in the system. If you don't have sufficiant antifreeze, you could have ice in the system preventing circulation. To ensure that's not the problem, Start the engine, run about 30 seconds, shut off for 5 minutes, start for another minute then shut off for another 5 minutes, etc. This will help to defrost the engine and hopefully prevent the head and block from cracking. Grant it, if you've run it the way you've said, the freeze plug should have started leaking. I hope this helps.

Message: Freezing isn't too much of an issue at this point, I live in north texas. Now that I think of it though the truck never overheated until the first freeze came through. Thank's for the info, I will most likely try all of the above methods until one works. Thanks again.

Message: Yeah Daddio, you're right the aux electric fan isn't working. I hope this is the end to my problem.
