I drove my truck to work the other day Transmission seemed to be working strong. (12hrs Later) I go and get in my truck fire it up put it in drive and there was nothing. I tried every gear I put it in 4 wheel drive still nothing. I towed it in the shop and put it on the hoist. I checked the linkage everything works fine. I start the truck up put it in gear and the tire turns once and stops, I rev up the truck and there is no movement, I noticed that there was 2 electrical plugs going top the tranny. One on top and one that goes into where the linkage goes into the tranny. Is my tranny toast or could it be some sort of sensor? I have looked around for a tranny and it is almost imposible to find one for this truck. How do I know what type of tranny is in my truck? is there a code that is in my VIN number to find out. I believe that the tranny in it is the 4 speed Auto I have the Over drive button on my dash.
Thank you for any info.

Dood good luck.
The A500 trans you have in your truck can be very tempemental and imposible to find good used. Rebuilt units are far from worth the money and new/remans are about the only way to go. But you may have to morgage your first born to get one.

Actually Madmac is partially wrong. Although the A500(42RH) is very similar to the tranny he has, its not it. Assuming you have a V8(because your in the V8 forum), the transmission you have is the A518(46RH). Its definately worth rebuilding, so long as the rest of the truck isnt falling apart. If you yank the tranny out yourself, and send it to a shop, your looking at around $1300 for a total teardown and rebuild. If you go to a shady tranny shop then yea they will try to jip you. $1300 should get you a total rebuild and 1-2 year warranty.

Going to a junkyard and getting one isnt a good idea unless you just wanted to get the wheels turning for a few months. Other than that its not a good idea cause, usually, it would have alot of miles on it and wouldnt last long.
Another option, and actually one i would consider would be going to the ebay store. That should cost from $800- $1000 or so. you can get a 2 year warranty included and i think thats shipped. All in all though, I'd probably end up yanking it out, and sending it to an old ma and pa owned tranny shop so you know your getting a good unit the first time. Hope this helps.

I had a 93 with the A500 and that cost me 1600 to get rebuilt with a year warranty. That was towing, pulling it out, rebuild and replace all in the same bill. I couldn't afford to drive it getting 16mpg with the 3.9 so I sold it for a car....now I want my truck back :(. Thats ok I am going to look for a newer one with the 4.7:)
