Subject: Smashed my door! IP: Logged
Message: I was pulling my girlfriends moms cavalier out of the freakin woods (don't even ask how she got it in there)and when I was directing my girlfriend through a path to find the car, she ran into a post( yah , getting her to drive was my first mistake).
In her defence, there was snow covering the post.
My question is ,(I have a 99',4x4,slt)if I want to buy my own door at a wrecker and paint it myself, what years of Dakotas would fit on there?
Also, could I fit a Durango door on it, and what years would fit?
I'm trying to save 400$ because of my 200 dollar deductible and a 200 dollar surcharge on my drivers licence. Can it be done for less than
400$. I live in Canada, if that changes the pricing at all.
Any thoughts would be nice.
Thanx
Mike

Message: try finding a salvage yard door with the same colour as your truck first even if it takes a while, buying paint & related supplies to re-paint a complete door -properly- is very expensive.

Message: try www.car-part.com. it is a database that searches salvage yards all across the u.s and canada. i'm sure you could find one with probably the same color door.
97-04 are all the sam for dak's. don't know about durangos.

Message: I can't resist - how DID she get it in the woods ?
You have what Dodge calls gen 2, enthusiasts call it gen 3 - '97 through '04 I think ? Til whenever the new style started. You might want to try car-part.com, a listing of the stock of many salvage yards online; including yards in Canada. You might even get lucky and find one the right color. Not knowing what part of Canada you are in, I did a quick search for doors in my area and there were quite a few in the $300 range. Good luck !

Message: How bad is the door dinged up? Couldn't have been moving fast at all. My thought is to fix the door you have. Do it yourself. Straighten the metal as well as possible and get a bondo kit(cheap). his will cost way less then bying a used door. Biggest expense will be painting if you take it to a shop. You can buy touch up paint at the dealer in a spray can and match things up nicely. Also, here anyway, we have a parts store that takes the paint number off your truck and they mix a spray can up for you. These are really nice and easy for a do-it-yourselfer to use. Try to keep the bondo less then 1/4 inch thick.

Message: Sorry.... post above should say... Keep the bondo less then 1/8 inch thick. You may not be good enough with the metal working to do this. If so get it as good as possible being sure the metal where bondo will be is gouged really well making the entire surface as rough as possible for the best adhesion

Message: I figured out that I should probably wait until the spring to do the painting so that the paint cures properly. I will probably just do the body repair and priming now to stop the rust from forming. Take my time and do it right.I figure that gives me a month or so to fix it up. It's so damn cold here right now, -52 with the wind chill, -40 without.Even in a shop it's hard to keep the temp up above 24oC - 30oC range.I would hate to have to do the painting 2 or 3 times (PB3 paint is freakin expensive). And that's also why I probably won't find a door that's already painted at a wrecker.
It's not a common color.
Will post my progress with before and after pics.
Hopefully there will be an improvement : )
