Message: I recently purchase a 2006 Dodge Dakota 4.7 V8, automatic, SLT, Club Cab pickup. I really like the vehicle, plenty of power and good gas mileage. I do, however, have a concern. My 5 speed automatic overdrive kicks in a little above 30 MPH. I can feel strain on the engine when I'm doing 35-40 MPH. Often I kick off the overdive button to releve the strain. I belive the overdrive would perorm much better above 40 MPH? Can the overdrive function in the computer be adjusted? If this problem persist premature engine bearing failures could result. Appreciate your assistance.
Thank you,
Richard Jones

Message: It could be the TPS is not working correctly. The PCM might think the throttle is somewhere it really isn't.
How does it drive otherwise? If you get on it hard, (WOT or near, etc.) does it still shift early? Or does it only when you are poking along easily?
Are there other aspects of the drivability that are not quite right?

Message: I agree, I would never get a new dakota unless they changed the body style back to what it used to look like. I dont care if the new daks out perform my 2001 3.9 in every category, i can always mod my truck even more, but you cant fix ugly.

Message: How do you feel the strain ? Modain makes some good points to check for malfunction, please ignore the other idiotic posts. If nothing is wrong mechanically, I don't think you have to worry about premature bearing failure, not common for the 4.7. Unless it is pinging, you may just be over sensitve to what it is doing. Does it ping ? In low load situations, they can get into higher gears pretty quick, but I've never heard of engine damage from that.

Message: I appreciate all the suggestions. Let me be a little more specifc. The problem only persist at the lower speeds, i.e. around 35-40 MPH and the engine RPM is around 1200 RPM, I can feel the engine stain a little when appying the gas. If you step on it or rapidly accelerate, it kicks out of OD and the RPM comes up, no problem. The TPS sensor makes some sense and I can bring the truck in to Dodge for a check of this. I have had previous Dodge trucks (01 DAK,03 RAM) and the OD on all of the others kicked in around 40-45 MPH. I believe for all around operation, this is an optimun range. I agree the styling was much better in the past, but handling and ride has improved and I hope the previous balljoint and brake problems have also improved?
Thanks,
Richard

Message: maybe you have 3.92 gears, they would shift earlier than if you had 3.55 or 3.21 gears before. and if it bothers you, just turn off O/D

Message: I wouldn't think it would be straining with 3.92 ? Still don't know what you mean by straining though, is it pinging, or not ?

Message: Richard, i understand what you are saying. My 03 did the same thing. I always got into the habit of turning my O/D off while traveling at slower speeds. If i remember correctly in my 4x4 my rpms where 2K at about 51 or 52 with O/D off. The speed limit on the stretch of road i took to work was 50mph. My gas mileage was the same regardless of overdrive or no overdrive. I had a 3.55 ratio. I now have 4.10 and use O/D most of the times now since i can cruise at 50 doing about 1500 rpm's

Message: I would think that could be adjusted. I agree my 00 with 3.55 is more in the 40-45 area as you mention. Sometimes up an incline it kicks in and seems a bit too early but it still has the torque to pull pretty easily.
