Subject: Gear swap on 4x4 IP: Logged
Message: Seemingly stupid question:
When changing gears on a 4x4, I assume you have to do the front and rear diffs, correct? Or can the T-case operate as a differential on it's own?
Thanks

Message: Gotcha, so I guess I'd need a 9.25 ring/pinion set for the rear and a Dana 35 Reverse cut for the front. Is that a total pain in the ass to install?

Message: You are bloody right.First of all You need installation master kits at 110-120 each(x2)
Why Dana? Why don't you buy both gears of the same make?

Message: I was just referencing Dana 35R at the model type for sizing purposes. I'll prob just buy both sets from summit racing, I think they sell richmond brand gears.
This may not even be necessary, I'm buying a 2003 Dakota with a tow package, so it may have 3.92s in it. Does the tow package automatically include 3.92s? I'll need to tow about 6klbs, so I need the shorter gears.

Message: The tow package definitely does not include the 3.92 gears; that is another option.

Message: Kowalski is right. My '97 4x4 had the tow package and 3.55 gears. The stock tires were 235/75R15's.

Message: my 93 cc 4x4 with towing package did NOT include 3.92's. But it pulled my 6500lbs trailer just fine. But if you plan on doing all kinds of towing of that weight, why not go full size? Biggest reason i say that is because i pulled a 30' travel trailer for a while. Found out that i can only legally pull 26ft and under. Serious fine if caught.

Message: Glad to hear you pulled that much without the shorter gears. My towing will be limited to a 23foot walkaround fishing boat and a 21 foot enclosed car hauler. I should be somewhere between 5 and 6k at most, fully loaded. Taking cars to the race track is the biggest concern, But should still only weigh in around 5k lbs. My boat ramp is only 300 feet from the house, so I'm sure I can manage the boat. Worse case I'll use 4 low to launch/retreive it on the ramp.
I only plan to tow maybe 10% of the time, so I'd rather stay away from a full size if I can.
