Subject: 2002 Rear Diff/Posi Clutch Pack Clips Br
IP: Logged

Message:
Has anyone run into this? I have a 2002 Dak with Trak Lok. Apparently the clips that hold the clutch pack have broken and reeked havoc in my rear differential.

Only have 70K on the truck. My mechanic says that he has seen this happening due to the OEM clips being too thin.

Any comments?

Terry

yep
happened to me on a 2004 Ram 1500,
no sign of problems until I removed the cover
for an inspection, in some cases the broken parts just settle on the bottom of the diff case, in other cases (like mine) parts of the clips remain in place and wear a grove in the housing,
the worst case scenario is when a clip fall into the ring/pinion, some trucks have had the rear axle lock up while driving.

many discutions about this on Dodge truck forums,
but no recall by Dodge, most dealers will fix if still under warranty but replace the parts with exactly the same crappy design.

2003-04-05 Rams 1500 with the factory Trak-Lok 9.25" diff are prone to this failure.

these clips hold the clutch packs during assembly but are also part of a contact surface that see's some torque while in operation.

they are made from a steel stamping and tend to crack from metal fatigue or stress.

it's the 'S' shape ends that breaks off

the only real cure is to get rid of the factory Trak-Lok and replace it with an aftermarket locker.
