Subject: 01 dak shaky and bouncy: IP: Logged
Message: Hey i was wondering, what do i check if my truck is bouncing a lot and steering wheel is shaky and there is a sound of something like a flat tire comming out from under my truck when i drive it?
Maybe i lost a weight or 2 on my tires?
or maybe it is my tires themselves? i have pro comp a/t, p265/75/r16's but they are a 10 ply tire
what should i have checked as far as suspension, brake rotors, a-arms, cv joints, shocks, ect...?
is there a troubleshooting list of some sorts, like check this first, then if it does not help then check this....?

Message: Suspect the ball joints first. I replaced the OEM's on my '01 RC 2wd at 115K with Moog greasable ball joints. The upper joints are the problem ones on most Daks. You are correct to also check the shocks, wheel balance, and brake rotors as a cause of steering wheel shake.

Message: Then have your tires checked. You may well have slipped a tire belt. 10 ply tires carry a lot of air making them hard as a rock plus the tires are hard anyway with no air.Being this hard it takes little out of round defects to make them bounce bad on a light truck like the Dakota. You may have a bent wheel.

Message: thanks for the replys:
i had my upper ball joints replaced when the recall occured like 1-2 years ago, but i guess they could still go bad again right?
how much do the moog greasable ball joints cost and where can i get them?
i have been told that my rims may be bent ? but every time they manage to balance the tires? maybe they are just full of bs when they say that they balanced them?
i already have some monroe reflex's but have not had the time to install them, so i will asap!

Message: Hey, have fun with those MOOG's, I put 3 sets in my 98 Dak last year! They aren't worth the box they're packaged in! I went to Spicer-made NAPA one.
I know I know, NAPA stands for Need Another Part A$$hole?

Message: BMan..... You are the first person I ever heard of that had a moog go out let alone 3 sets in one year. You didn't by chance bust the seal cups installing them?

Message: Nope, one set had less than 1700 miles on them! I forced 6000 out of the next set but it was floppy!
I put synthetic grease in them, made sure they weren't busted during install.
They only have a 1 year warranty now! MOOG knows they are making junk now.

Message: Sounds like you may have a few problems. To get to the bottum of it you need to be more specific about the conditions when you experience all these things.
Bouncy-bouncy might mean new shocks. Vibrating steering? If it's when you brake get new aftermarket rotors. If it's when cruising check wheel balance. That has been one particular gremlin I've only very recently been able to permanently solve after 45000 miles on my 04.

Message: Avies48 - I'd suspect the tires before the wheels. Could be out of balance, or one might have a broken belt.
Lead, follow, or get out of the way

Message: If your ball joints were replaced under the recall the new ones have an extended warranty on, I think over 100k miles if not mistaken or something like that.
